Doug Weaver is signed to grid coaching staff Not too many college football teams can boast two former head mentors are on their coaching staff—but KU can. Friday, head coach Frank "Pepper" Rodgers announced the signing of Doug Weaver to the staff. Weaver, a first-year law student at KU was pilot of the Kansas State University Wildcats for the past several seasons. Weaver, characterized by his "dapper dan corduroy" he wore at each game, resigned following the 1966 football season at K-State. He enrolled in the KU School of Law second semester. He was replaced at KSU by Frank Gibson. THIS WILL also be Rodgers' first year at KU replacing Jack Mitchell who also resigned following last year's grid season. Mitchell had purchased the Wellington News and plans to move to Wellington soon to take over operations of the paper. He is also on the board of directors for a new state bank recently approved in Lawrence. Weaver joins Bob Green of Vanderbilt to become the second former head coach in the KU staff. All of Weaver's coaching experience has been in the Big Eight. He started out under Dan Devine of Missouri and then moved to the head spot at K-State about ten years ago. IN MAKING the announcement Friday Rodgers remarked: "To have a man of Doug Weaver's ability on your staff is something I'm sure any coach would be extremely proud of. With the experience Doug has in the Big Eight Conference we feel certain he'll be able to help us in many ways." Rodgers did not pinpoint Weaver's specific coaching duties, except to say he'll be working with the varsity staff. Weaver also was elated with the opportunity to remain in football in this capacity. "I am grateful to Coach Rodgers for the opportunity to coach while I attend the law school at Kansas University." Weaver said. "COACH RODGERS has an intriguing and straight-forward philosophy. I feel fortunate to be able to work for him in any capacity he feels will help his promising program." Weaver, 35, was a bantam-sized linebacker at 5-9 and 170 pounds for Michigan State's national football powers of 1950-51-52. After two years in the Air Force he returned to his alma mater as freshman coach in 1956. He was varsity assistant with the Spartans in 1957 and the next year joined Dan Devine's new staff at Missouri. After two year's as Missouri's line coach Weaver landed the top job at Kansas State, and was at Manhattan from 1960 until stepping down last fall. Weaver and his wife, Nancy, have three children, Amy, 11; Doug Jr., 8, and Matthew, 4. MERIT INCREASE AMARILLO, Tex.—(UPP)—One county official had to get two raises to make as much as $1.11 per year. County officials must have thought he was doing well—the gave him one raise of 10 per cent, making it $1.10 a year, and then another of 10 per cent of the original 10 per cent, making it $1.11.
