College directors set By KATHY KISER Directors and assistant directors have been appointed to head the five "colleges-within-the-college," instituted for incoming freshmen. Jerry Lewis, assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts and shapiro on sports All-Star Banter Baseball's longest All-Star game was played recently, and what a pitcher's battle it was. By GERRY SHAPIRO Fifteen innings of the greatest baseball in the history of the sport were played, and the National League won only by a score of 2-1. And what provided the extra push needed by the National League to win? Jim "Catfish" Hunter, the pride and joy of Kansas City's Athletics, served up the gopher ball in the National's half of the 15th inning, giving Tony Perez his shot at glory, and the win to the National League. IT SEEMS A shame that such a respectable team as the Athletics should be represented in the All-Star game in this rather sorry form. Last year the Athletics had two representatives on the American League's team. Lew Krausse, one of Kansas City's biggest bonus-baby stars, had the rough assignment of pitching batting practice for the rest of the team. Lew handled it well, though, and came through just fine. Hunter, the A's other player on the team, warmed the bench for the full nine innings. Of course one has to consider the possibility that, had Hunter been allowed to play last year, he would not have been on the team this year. So, a marvelous tradition of mediocrity has been established and perpetuated by our beloved A's. Perhaps in the recent All Star game, an American institution has been erected in the hearts of Americans. Some of the more base and crass among us, however, will continue to ask, "What ever happened to winning?" Science, will again head Centenial College, which was begun last year as a pilot program and will also include sophomores. The assistant directors are Fred McEihenie and Miss Mary Lynne Mangan. OLIVER College is directed by Mrs. J. B. Stroup, and the assistant directors are Louis Tyler and James Nabors. William Balfour is the director of Pearson College. The assistant directors are Mrs. Edward Flenjte and Mrs. James Brooks. North College, located in Gertrude Sellars Pearson Hall, will be headed by John Myers and assisted by Mrs. Paul Crawford. THE IDEA behind these colleges is to give freshmen and sophomores the advantage of a small academic community, and yet to preserve for the student access to the resources of the whole university. It will also give the students a chance to know each other better since they will be living in the same area with the other students in their classes. This is hoped to be done by centering the colleges in the residence halls. Freshmen living at home and also fraternity men will be equally distributed in the colleges.
