Speech, hearing clinic

Every weekday flocks of preschool youngsters troop into the basement of condemned Old Robinson.
They file past a boarded-up staircase and down a hall lit by a single bare bulb. At the end of the hall they turn into a waiting room furnished in early Donald Duck. The tots are attending the
Speech and Hearing Clinic in Old Robinson.
Treatment at the clinic is free for both the tots and the adults who attend evening classes. It is so because University students do much of the therapy.
The makeshift quarters include two observation rooms complete with one-way mirrors in the walls, "bugged" play tables, and
a miniature radio station. Here the students are observed by their supervisors as they work.
The supervisor watches the student from a darkened chamber, listens via the "bug" and talks to the student through the transmitter into an earpiece the student wears. All this happens without disturbing the clinician-client relationship.

Picnic is slated
The Annual Phi Delta Kappa Picnic will be Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. near the volleyball court on the west side of Potter Lake.

HANDBALL
The student trainees will become speech clinicians in public schools and hospitals, or go into private practice after completion of the Masters degree.
Housed in the old dressing rooms of the gymnasium, the clinic lacks adequate space. The basement leaks when it rains. The staff is philosophical about it, though, because their quarters were formerly in the quonset huts behind Strong Hall.
The director of the clinic, James B. Lingwall, assistant professor of speech and drama, said the clinic will move to Henley House, across from the Abington Book Store, when Old Robinson is torn down this fall.
"It will be a step up, literally as well as figuratively," Lingwall said.
In Henley House the clinic will have four observation rooms and more office space. Although incoming freshmen will no longer be screened for speech defects, Lingwall hopes to do a more comprehensive job of helping University students in the new quarters.
