Cub Power was the cry of countless Chicago fans July 2, as Leo Durocher's "second division Cubs" climbed into first place supremacy in the National League. Their reign went up in smoke two days later amidst the Fourth of July fireworks. The question now is whether or not there's a chance of an elevated World Series between Chicago's Cubs and White Sox when the baseball season finally comes to a close.
The Cubs have moved into contention on three factors alone. Luck, surprisingly strong pitching and consistent hitting. These three factors are made up of the following seven points:
- Fitcher Ken Holtzman left the Cubs in May to serve Military Duty in the Army. He had compiled a 5-0 record before he left.
- Chuck (Twiggy) Hartenstein was called up to replace Holtzman. His excellent sinker makes him an effective reliefer.
- Furguson Jenkins, obtained last year from Philadelph
  the most effective pitcher with an 11-5 record.
- Adolfo Phillips is a spectacular centerfielder.
- Al Spangler, a former free agent, is an effective utility man.
- Ernie Banks, who many considered washed up. is batting over 300 with 15 home runs and was named to the All Star Team.
- Aside from Banks, the hitting attack comes from Billy Williams; Glenn Beckert; Randy Hundley, a young catcher obtained from the Giants; and Ron Santo, an effective third baseman who is currently breaking out of an early season slump.
The results of these seven points are that the Cubs have scored more runs than any other Major League team; and their team average is third in the National League.
Yet, despite these assets, I doubt that the Cubs will win the National League Pennant, let alone play in an elevated series.
To begin with, I feel that the Cubs are not stable enough to outlast the other pennant contenders, but I'm convinced that Leo Durocher will manage the Cubs to their first, first division finish since 1946, 21 seasons ago.
The pressures placed on the Cubs this season as contending team may be too hard to deal with for last year's cellar team. But then again this type of pressure may be no different from the pressure of being in the second division for 21 seasons, although it may prove to be an inspirational asset in the Cubs' quest for both a first division finish and a possible pennant, which includes an elevated series with the White Sox.
Yet, in the event that the Cubs do win the pennant, we must remember that a possible elevated series also hinges on the White Sox. Although the White Sox are in first place and the Cubs are in second place, there are four points hinging on the American League team's pennant success.
- The team batting average is .238 compared to the Cubs' .259.
- They have scored 96 fewer runs than have the Cubs.
- Pitching is great compared to weak hitting.
- Al Weis, White Sox second baseman, is out for the season due to torn cartilage in his left knee. This injury was incurred in a base path collision with Frank Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles who slid into second base to break up a possible double-play. Robinson suffered a brain concussion, plus double vision
Thus, the White Sox too must play inspired ball to bring at least one pennant to Chicago, if not an eleveated World Series.
National League after fifth straight victory
ANAHEIM, Calif. — (UPI)—The American League which has not won an All-Star game since 1962 leaned toward ex-local boy Dean Chance to break the National League's dominance today while high-kicking Juan Marichal will be named to continue it.
Chance, of the Minnesota Twins, was a Cy Young Award winner with the California Angels and has an 11-7 record this season. Manager Hank Bauer of the American League was expected to name him officially as the junior circuit starter while Walt Alston of the National League was reported all set to go with the San Francisco Giants' Marichal, 12-7.
Pitching, however, was not the major problem confronting Bauer who has to decide which are the healthy players in his Arnica brigade.
THE AMERICAN League team lost its two leading sluggers, Al Kaline of Detroit and Frank Robinson of Bauer's own Baltimore Orioles, the day the team selections were announced.
And if that is not enough. Bauer has to decide if Harmon Killebrew of the Twins, teammate Rod Carew and Rico Petrocelli of the Boston Red Sox are well enough to perform in the annual classic.
THE BIGGEST problem that Walter Alston had to solve was how to arrange his outfielders, Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves, Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals play right field normally. Alston indicated prior to his arrival here today for the press conference at which he said he would make public his lineup that he would play Brock in left field, Aaron at center field and Clemente in right field.
Because of the injury problem that has plagued the American League team, the senior circuit was favored 13-10 in the Las Vegas odds to win the game today.
Mulcahy leaves Kansas
Bob Mulcahy, KU freshman basketball coach for the past three years, was named Saturday to succeed Dwayne Clodfelter as head basketball coach at South Dakota University at Vermillion.

Clodfelter resigned on doctor's orders.
A search is under way to find Mulcahy's successor, according to KU head coach Ted Owens. The 35-year-old Mulcahy also did scouting and worked with the Jayhawk Varsity in addition to his coaching of the freshmen.
Raised in Kentucky, he played college ball under Paul McBrayer at Eastern Kentucky in 1951-54. As a schoolboy player he earned all-state honors in 1949 and 1950 at Lafayette High in Lexington.
Beginning as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky, Mulcahy's coaching career was interrupted
by a two-year Army term where he received the rank of first lieutenant in Army artillery. Following his service, he coached at Seneca High School of Louisville and compiled one of the top records in the history of Kentucky prep basketball.
In six years at Seneca, Mulcahy's teams won 125 games with only 14 defeats, annexing two state titles in 1963 and 1964, three regional titles, five district crowns and five Jefferson County Conference titles. During his last two seasons at Seneca, his teams put together a 29-game winning streak.
Mulcahy was noted for his work with the KU freshmen, who lost only five games in his three seasons as head coach.
The coach is married to the former Jennie Chattin of Ashland, Ky. They have two children.
