The California junior college long jump and triple jump champion, Stan Whitley of Hancock College, has signed a national letter of intent with KU. Whitley, who graduated from the Santa Maria, Calif., junior college last month, won the state titles with leaps of 25-2 and 49-10½. He also ran the leadoff leg with Hancock's 440-yard relay team that set a national junior college record of 40.7. HE COMPETED at the Kansas Relays last spring and set two freshman-junior college division records while winning the long jump at 23-9%4 and the triple jump at 46-7%. He graduated from Springnair High School at Washington, D.C., before enrolling at the California junior college. Track Coach Bob Timmons is hopeful Whitley can step in and fill the shoes of co-captain Gary Ard, the Big Eight and NCAA long jump champion who graduated this spring. Ard also was a former California junior college jumping king at Modesto before transferring to KU. Filling the position as linebacker for his third straight year will be senior Mike Sweatman. Sweatman was chosen last year's Big Eight Linebacker of the Year. He was the leading tackler on the KU defensive platoon last year. The 205-pound linebacker is credited with 116 tackles last season, 47 solo encounters and 69 assists. He is a two-year letterman and is expected to be ready to go this fall. Handling the signal calling for KU this season will be Bob Douglass. The 205-pound quarterback completed 44 percent of his passes last season. He also carried the ball 72 times, averaging 1.5 yards per carry. John Jackson, one-year letterman, was switched from a running back position to split end during spring practice. Last season Jackson owned the number three slot for total rushing yardage. He was also fourth in pass receiving last season with eight snags. Jackson carried the ball an average of 22 yards on kick-off returns last year. The 173-pound junior is a probable starter this year. One of the most outstanding men on the KU defensive squad is defensive end John Zook. Zook, an outstanding sophomore at center in basketball last year, had 30 solo tackles and 39 assists during the last gridiron season. Weighing 225 pounds, Zook will stop the plays around right end next fall. Don Shanklin owns three statistical first places for last year's Jayhawk squad. He was first in kickoff returns with a total of 387 yards, totaled 212 yards on punt returns and averaged 4.0 yards a carry on 182 carries. Rodgers switched Shanklin from running back to flanker back during spring practice. The 173-pound junior should handle the ball a lot this season. Back again this year to handle the punting for the Jayhawkers is David Morgan. As a sophomore, he averaged 42.4 yards on 46 punts last season. His longest boot was 70 yards. Morgan also plays defensive back. Two-year letterman, Bruce Peters, was switched from defensive end to defensive tackle during spring practice. In 1966 the 215-pounder had 57 tackles, 24 solo encounters and 33 assists. John Mosier, last year's freshman quarterback has been changed to tight end for varsity action. The 200-pound sophomore was a High School All-American his senior year. He played his high school ball at Wichita, Kansas. Another good prospect with three more seasons at KU is Emery Hicks. Hicks plays linebacker and middle guard on defense. He is sure to be included on the tackle charts this fall. Coach Rodgers pointed out Pat Hutchens as an outstanding sophomore defensive back for the Jayhawkers. The 171-pound sophomore is very quick in the backfield.
