Mt. Oread is full of strange people By BRENDA BORN The casual observer sees many different kinds of people at KU during the summer. One type of person often seen on the Hill is the young man attending summer school. He usually carries an armload of books and ambles along the sidewalk trying to act like he is not really in a hurry. This fellow is careful not to spoil his casual appearance by looking interested in anything. A different kind of summer school student is the one carrying a single notebook and sometimes wearing glasses. He has an alert, owlish look because he glances constantly from side to side as if he was making mental movies of the campus. A self-assured young lady also appears from time to time between summer school classes. Her hair is fashionably short and frosted. Her sandals wind up her legs to tie at the knee. She walks with a purposeful bounce because she knows exactly who she is and where she is going. BLACK ATTACHE cases seem to distinguish the older members of the University's summer session. Such a carry-all accompanies the man in the plaid shirt, checked shorts and the transparent rimmed glasses, whose face shows the ruts of the rat race—he looks but does not see. The attache case also belongs to the gentleman wearing the summer suit. He is clutching a half open umbrella and has a nervous, intelligent look. He is smiling. High schoolers attending the Midwestern Music and Art camp make up still other types of people on campus during the summer. THE HIGH SCHOOL girl with long curly hair, glasses and a longish gathered skirt is almost extinct at KU. She formerly could be seen walking in clumpy sandals and looking frankly a little lost. This type has been replaced by a species of young woman who wears sunglasses even in the rain and favors mini-skirts. She feels just as lost as her predecessor, but manages to hide the fact behind her "shades" and a screen of cigarette smoke. Variations of the female summer camper include the plump girl in tent-size pink shorts who wears a timid expression and always manages to walk two paces behind her friends. The sparrow-like girl, skinny with long straight hair and huge eyes can also be seen on the Hill. She can be seen when she can be separated from her many male companions, that is. ONE MEMBER of this group of male companions travels in a constant religious reverie—the object of his worship is himself. He is so sure of his place that he doesn't even use any of his friends' popular ego-building fads. PATRONIZE KANSAN ADVERTISERS Many of these friends are not quite as secure. They make up the noisy element on campus, proving themselves in measure of loudness. This type can usually be heard before they are seen.
