Speech festival opens More than 44 area high schools are expected to be represented Saturday at KU during the annual district Speech and Drama Festival. Under the direction of the Kansas State High School Activities Association and the KU speech and drama department, the festival will allow high school students to compete for state recognition with judging of events done by KU faculty and state high school speech and drama teachers. Students will be judged on performances of one-act plays, duet acting, dramatic readings, oral interpretation of poetry and informative and original speeches. Activities will take place in Murphy Hall, Lawrence High School and Central Junior High School and are open to the public.
