Strong Hall Provides Amateur Geology Study
Stalactites—icicle-type deposits of calcium carbonate—are forming at the back entrance of Strong Hall, under the balcony.
They are presently about one inch long.
ROBERT SCOTT, LAWRENCE graduate student in geology, explained that they are formed by dripping water which contains calcium deposits. The water condenses on the overhanging stone and the calcium carbonate remains.
At Strong Hall, the dripping water is the result of past rains.
As the process is repeated, the deposits increase in length, and stalactites result.
Harry Buchholz, director of the KU buildings and grounds department, explained that the long-retired balcony of Strong Hall once had a pair of steps leading from it.
WHEN THE STEPS WERE removed, the porous stones of which the balcony is constructed were exposed.
When it rains, Buchholz said, water collects on the porch and is absorbed by the porous stone.
"The stones are like sponges," he said.
Buchholz said the old stones eventually deposit the water and it seeps to the ground.
Many students walk through the north entrance of Strong every day and feel a drop of water on their heads. The usual explanation given the phenomenon is that the roof is leaking, but the real reason is that water has seen through the stone.
Sometimes water may not start to seep until after all the rains have ceased.
Were it not for students walking on the wet concrete, stalagmites — inverted stalactites — might be formed. They are built from the bottom up.
