Last night, six members of Sigma Chi social fraternity journeyed to Topeka and successfully retrieved a golden key belonging to their neighbor, the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. The larger members of the fraternity were selected for this project. The leader was Don Elliott, Russell junior and the smallest member of the band at 5-10, 190 pounds. He had learned where the key was. Other members of the party were Jeri Craig, Lawrence senior, 6-2, 230; Chris Whitenight, Lawrence senior, 6-4, 220; John Hornung, Wichita senior, 6-4, 210; Clark Mandigo, Kansas City sophomore, 6-3, 200, and Steve Cade, Independence freshman, 6-2, 205. WHEN ASKED IF the crew had met any resistance, the burly Craig replied, "The only resistance was forty five cents at the turnpike." "It was a pushover," chimed in Whitight. The cross was retrieved about 12:30 a.m. at the trailer house of three Washburn students and returned to the Kappa Kappa Gamma house at 2 a.m. Mandigo related the details of the conquest. He said that as the six were trying to get at the cross underneath the trailer house, one of the occupants opened the door "What do you need?" the man asked gruffly. "Nothing," replied Craig in c- qually gruff tones. "Who did you come to see?" the man questioned. "Nobody," replied Craig. "WHAT'S HAPPENING?" he asked again. "Nothing," grunted Craig. "Oh, I see you are a retrieving party," the man replied. After noting the six large forms, the man then helped remove the key. The party then drove back to Lawrence. The expedition was precipitated by rumors that the Washburn students were going to steal the Sigma Chi cross which hangs on the front of their chapter house at 1439 Tennessee. On the cross are the words, "In Hoc Signo vices," meaning "In this sign we conquer." And, that's exactly what the six members did.
