Governor Anderson Continues 25-Year Tradition In Choosing 1963 Jayhawker Queen and Party Selection of the Jayhawkwer queen and princesses by a celebrity is a KU tradition dating back at least 25 years. While thumbing through a 1938 yearbook, a Jayhawker Royal party of 15 can be seen photographed formally in satin evening gowns. Though the campus and many other KU traditions have changed since 1938 when Kyser, Kabible and their band, appeared here, the manner of choosing Jayhawker queens has not changed. Celebrities are still choosing the queen. Recently, Governor John Anderson selected Miss Coffman and her attendants from photographs of ten finalists narrowed down by Raymond Nichols, vice-chancellor from 35 original candidates from organized women' living groups. IN ADDITION to the judging of the contest, Tom Tatlock, editor of the 1963 Jayhawker, pointed out that the Jayhawker contest is unique from other queen contests because it emphasizes the grades and activities of the contestants. "The Queen and princesses are representatives of KU in excellence," he said. In the past two years, movie stars Warren Beatty and Paul Newman were judges for the contest. The couple left for a belated honeymoon in Oklahoma last week-end only to return to rice-throwing neighbors. The evidence; a bank statement addressed to "Mr. and Mrs." But the biggest surprise to the other roomers was not the weekend honeymoon, but was rather that the couple was married in January and had been keeping the secret under their hats. The couple, both sophomores, had been living in the same rooming house; he, in the basement, and she, on the top floor. The arrangement has worked out fine, the couple reports. Both are music majors. They have been working their way through college by alternating semesters. While one attended school for a term, the other worked. BIRD TV-RADIO 908 Mass.
