Page 4 University Daily Kansan Wednesday, Feb. 20, 1963 Bergman Lecture To Precede Film Per-Olof Mascher, Swedish visiting assistant professor of German, will speak on "Ingmar Bergman, the Swedish Artist" at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Forum Room of the Kansas Union. The lecture will precede the showing of Bergman's "The Virgin Spring" at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Hoch Auditorium. Following the showing, an open discussion will be led by Mascher and Thomas R. Buckman, University libraries director, in the Music and Browsing Room of the Kansas Union. "In Ingmar Bergman's films we meet a many-sided artist, whose work ranges from gay comedy to the most dismal tragedy," Mascher said. "Some of his plot problems include: man's hopeless, irremediable loneliness, his constant wrestling with the problems of good and evil. God and the devil, and his perpetual struggle to find a meaning in this cruel, brutal world of ours," he said. "The tragic element is, however, by far the strongest, and not even his gayest comedies are free of the typical 'Ingmar Bergman' problems," Mascher said. "Never has Ingmar Bergman depicted the meaningless cruelty of life more ruthlessly and shockingly than in 'The Virgin Spring', which is based on a ballad from the 14th century, . . ." Mascher says. A young girl riding to church is raped and murdered in the forest by herdsmen who try to sell her dress at the nearest house, which happens to be her home. Recognizing his daughter's dress, the farmer kills the herdsman. When he realizes what he has done, he promises God to build a church on the spot where his daughter was killed. When he lifts his daughter from the ground, a spring flows from the place where she lay in the forest. Mascher will distribute synopses of the film at the Friday night showing. He warns about the film, "There is nothing sensational: it's disgusting, and it's nauseating because Bergman is demonstrating brutality for a special reason." Mascher says there are things other than brutality in the film, and comments that the end can be seen as a way out of this vicious circle of brutality. Buckman says, "The Virgin Spring' is a rather unusual film, in some ways a rather cruel and brutal film, but nevertheless a very good film. "Although the film seems rather shocking, viewed in its entirety, it is well-balanced," he said. Many of them admire our shirts so much they sell them under their own names. High praise indeed, and we should like to reciprocate by advertising their (our) shirts. But it's hard to know just where to start. Obviously we can't say things like "None Genuine Without This Label" when they are all quite genuine, you know. And it would be silly to say "Try An Eagle Shirt Today!" when it is likely you already have a drawerful; even though you didn't know it until just this minute. So all we can suggest is that you send in for your Eagle label.
