Page 6 University Daily Kansan Tuesday, Feb. 19, 1963 KU Meets K-State Tonight Season records and team personnel are of little importance when the Kansas Jayhawkers and the Kansas State Wildcats renew their basketball arch-rivalry. Tonight, the two Kansas schools meet for their 147th time in the series which dates back to 1907. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Allen Field House. THE GAME IS an important one for both teams. As a result of Iowa State's victory over league-leading Colorado, the Wildcats now have a chance for the league title, but must win to keep their hopes alive. The Jayhawkers, who won the Big Eight pre-season tournament in December, have since managed to win only two games, while losing seven. As Coach Dick Harp says, the Jayhawkers are fighting to retain their self-respect. A victory over the Wildcats would help. The Wildcats also have a grudge to pick concerning the finals of the Big Eight tournament. The Jayhawkers won 90-88 in four overtimes, and Coach Tex Winter's five have not forgotten that night. THERE ARE several sidelights to the game that promises to make it one of the hardest fought battles this season. First, KU guard Nolen Ellison is nearing the 1,000 career point total, which only six KU players have managed to make. Ellison needs 32 points tonight to join Clyde Lovelle, Wilt Cham Game Data Probable Starters Kansas State Probable Starters Kansas State Willie Murrell (6-6) F Gary Marriott (6-4) F Roger Suttner (7-0) C Max Moss (6-0) G Al Peithman (6-1) G Kansas Al Correll (6-3½) F Jim Dumas (6-1) F George Unseld (6-7) C Nolen Ellison (6-1) G Dave Schichtle (6-2) G Roberts Leaves Team For Personal Reasons Jay Roberts, 6-4 junior forward from Des Moines, Iowa, quit the KU varsity basketball team for personal reasons. Roberts, a reserve, made the winning basket in KU's 90-88 four overtime victory over Kansas State in the Big Eight tournament. KU scored an 84-82 win at Manhattan in the 1960 Big Eight NCAA playoff, which went one overtime . . . The two rival coaches, KU's Dick Harp and Tex Winter of State, stand 8-8 in their all-time warring which began in 1957 when the former moved up from assistantship under Phog Allen . . . All-time individual point high for this series is Mike Wrolewski's 46 in KSU's 91-72 victory at Lawrence last year . . . KU fans hope that Ellison hits his 1,000 point tonight against Kansas State. berlain, Charlie Black, Jerry Gardner and Bill Bridges in this elite group. Ellison's career game high is 32 points which, coincidentally, he set in the first meeting this year between the two schools. Second, Coach Dick Harp and K-State Coach Tex Winter have each won eight games since the two started coaching against each other in 1957. Tonight's game will break the deadlock. Oklahoma game temporarily, as he got in foul trouble early and eventually fouled out of the game. MUCH OF THE Jayhawkers' hopes rest in George Unseld. The 5-7 center injured an ankle in practice last week and is still not running at top speed. He played in the Another question mark is that of Al Correll, 6-3 forward-guard. Correll joined the team at mid-season and has season highs of 17 and 14 points. A sterling performance by Correll would give the Jayhawkers a much better chance of upsetting the Wildcats. The Wildcats will bring a well-balanced club into the contest. Their leading scorer is 6-6 Willie Murrell who is averaging 18-6 points per game. Murrell, a junior college transfer, is playing his first season in the Big Eight. GARY MARRIOTT, 6-5 forward, has been bothered by injuries throughout the season, but has still managed to average 14.1 points per game. Mariott is in peak condition for tonight's game. Having the task of guarding Unseld is 7-0 center Roger Suttner, who is averaging 9.6 points per game.
