Page 10 University Daily Kansan Cigarette Machines Will Stay in Dorms Cigarette machines will remain in freshman women's dormitories unless there is a sharp increase in purchases from these machines. Frank Burge, Kansas Union manager and controller of KU vending machines, said he has found nothing that would merit taking the machines from their present locations. He added that the matter was still under consideration. Burge observed that during January, 689 packages of cigarette were sold in one of the freshman dormitories, an average of 22 packages per day. Twins First Quads Next However, this number also includes packages purchased by adult workers and personnel. The law which prompted the study states that it is illegal for minors to buy cigarettes. Though it is not a new law or statute, Burge noted that he posts signs on all machines, stating that minors should not make purchases from them. "We expect college students to act as young adults," Burge said. He feels it would be "childish" to remove the machines. He said surely in an adult society as KU, students should be able to govern themselves according to the statute. Burge said anyone under 21 is violating the law by making purchases from the machines. Burge has found no evidence that the law is being broken. However, the involved machines will be watched. Would-be Thief Reconsiders EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — (UPI)— Darwin L.
