University Daily Kansan Page 7 Brandt's Victory Staggers West German Opposition BERLIN — (UPI) — West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt, re-elected in an overwhelming personal victory that sent the Communists staggering, today pledged a continued fight with the Western allies to keep the city free Brandt's Socialists gained support in yesterday's municipal election at the expense of Chancellor Konrad Adenauer's Christian Democrats, reflecting apparent popular disapproval of Adenauer's new ties with French President Charles de Gaulle. Political observers said the vote showed a general fear that Adenauer was drawing closer to France to the detriment of the alliance with the United States and Britain, which West Berliners consider vital to the city's defense. Despite snow and sleet, 89.9 per cent of eligible voters went to the polls. THE SOCIALISTS' victory was so sweeping that only the city's proportional representation electoral system kept them from winning all 134 seats in the City Assembly. In a victory statement, Brandt said the result was "a destructive rebuff for the 'wall party'" — the Communists — and a "tremendous vote of confidence" for his anti-Communist policies. Brandt promised that he would work hand-in-hand with the Western allies to keep West Berlin from falling into the hands of the Communists. West Berliners, turning out in record numbers, showed cold disdain for the campaign threats and promises of the Communists. They gave the Reds only 20,887 votes, or 1.3 per cent of the total, for their worst showing ever. The future is purchased by the present- We'd like to add to Dr. Johnson's thought: And the present is NOW. Starting to plan your financial future while you're young and still in college is a wise decision. And the life insurance program that you begin now could turn out to be the most valuable part of that financial planning. Our Campus office specializes in planning life insurance programs for college men and women. For full information about the benefits of getting a head start, stop by or telephone. OF AMERICA 1722 W. 9th VI J-3-5692 THIS WAS THE FIRST municipal election since the Communists erected the anti-refugee wall across Berlin in August, 1961, and the Reds sought to exploit the city's divisions. It was watched with keen interest because Berlin is the only city in West Germany where the Communists still run for office. The Reds also had threatened "intolerable results" if the democratic parties won and continued their anti-Communist policy. Even East German Communist leader Walter Ulbricht joined in the threats During the campaign, the Communists said they were the only faction that could negotiate with the East German regime for passage of West Berliners through the wall to visit relatives. Two out of three West Berliners have relatives in the eastern sector whom they have not seen since the wall went up. The Socialists won an absolute majority in 11 of the city's 12 boroughs and a simple majority in the 12th. They even defeated Deputy Mayor Franz Amrehn, head of the Christian Democratic branch here. BRANDT'S PARTY wound up with 89 seats in the Assembly. The Christian Democrats won 41 and the Free Democrats 10. The Socialists took all 80 electoral districts.
