LONDON — (UPI) — Prime Minister Harold MacMillan's efforts to recover from the Common Market crisis were marred today by reports of spreading criticism in his own Conservative party ranks. Criticism Spreading In Tory Ranks Over Macmillan's Market Fiasco London newspapers said the Conservative backbenchers, disappointed by the Common Market failure, want a new and younger man to fight the next general election against the resurgent Labor party. The Daily Sketch said "many Tory backbenchers would not be surprised if at Easter or in May, Mr. MacMillan decided to bow out gracefully." THE EVENING NEWS said Mac-Millan has hinted in private conversations that retirement is very much in his mind, but the newspapers added that the 69-year-old prime minister has had similar moods in the past. MacMillan has come under fierce Laborite attack in the House of Commons debate on Britain's failure to enter the six-nation European Common Market. The Laborites have charged MacMillan with a "policy vacuum" and "bungling" in canceling Princess Margaret's visit to France in retaliation for the French veto of Market membership. The Conservatives gave MacMillan solid support in a parliamentary vote of confidence Tuesday, but the press implied it was a matter of self preservation rather than agreement with their leader's position. IN THE FACE of the mounting criticism, the government pushed ahead with efforts to counter the effect's of Britain's exclusion from Europe. Foreign Secretary Lord Home and other officials were involved in talks with Walter Scheel, the West German minister for economic cooperation, on the general European situation in the light of France's veto of Britain. MacMillan is seeking to increase trade with the United States and the Commonwealth, conclude world commodity pacts, and devise a new wage policy to bolster the country's lagging economy. THE DAILY MAIL said "a mood of deep unrest" has seized the Conservatives. The Mail's political correspondent, Walter Terry, said the sudden collapse of Tory morale was due to MacMillan's poor showing against Labor in the Commons debate and the "fiasco" over Princess Margaret's canceled visit to France. Two censure motions have been tabled in Commons as a result of the uproar caused by Margaret's cancellation. Laborites called the action "peevish and petty." The Daily Herald, the Daily Express and the Guardian said the Conservatives want a younger man than MacMillan as party leader. Herald political correspondent Harold Hutchinson said "there is no big revolt against the Prime Minister — but there is not much enthusiasm for him either." Turner commented briefly on the Big Eight Student Government conference, held last fall at the University of Missouri. He said KU representatives demonstrated there that they are for action. BOTH TURNER and Reuben McCornack, Abilene junior, spoke at the meeting on the accomplishments of the ASC. Each praised Vox's success in enacting its platform. Greg Turner, Seattle, Wash., junior and Vox Populi All Student Council member, said last night he will not seek office in the spring election. As examples, he cited ASC support of civil rights; an increase in the scope of the ASC; action to form a student advisory board on enrollment, and the distribution of committee lists to organized houses and interested individuals. McCornack said 7 of 8 planks in the party's platform had either been enacted or were being acted on at present. "WE HAVE A good record," McCornack said, "but we shouldn't stop here." He said he hopes the party will present a platform designed to give more services to students. YOUR BATTERY is the "KU has the best student government in the Big Eight," he said, "but we are only on the side of the hill, not on the top." Turner said he would campaign actively for the Vox platform, and urged that the party present a unified front to insure success in the coming election. IN OTHER BUSINESS, the party elected Jim Frazier, Topeka junior, and Mary Cay Rudolph, Wymore, Neb, senior, as Independent vice-presidents. Turner had been mentioned earlier as a possible Vox candidate for Student Body president.
