Page 8 University Daily Kansan Thursday, Feb. 14, 1963 Scoops on SPORTS By Steve Clark --- Most of the intramural leagues are in their final round, and as a result competition is fierce for division championships and spots in league championship tournaments. The first two teams in each division will earn rights to enter the playoffs. In case of ties, a coin toss will determine which team will be in the playoffs. THIS IS A precedence in the intramural leagues, says Walter Mikols, director of the leagues. Because of the length of the season, playoffs for second place would take too long. The playoffs are tentatively scheduled to begin Wednesday. The surprise team of the fraternity A leagues, Phi Kappa Theta appears to have the Division I wrapped up. The Phi Kap's have a 6-0 record and have one remaining game that with winless Sigma Phi Epsilon Friday. There will be a big clash between Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon for second place in the division and a tourney berth. The two meet at 6:15 p.m. Friday. THE BETAS ARE the defending hill champions for the last three years. But at this time, Sigma Alpha Epsilon seems to have an edge. John Henderson and Jack Galloway, both all-league last year, John Williams and ex-freshman basketball player Dave Stinson comprise the nucleus of the Sig Alph team. The Betas have two ex-freshman basketball players in Fred Littoy, who stands 6-5. and John Atkinson. Division II seemed to be decided until Delta Chi upset Delta Upsilon Tuesday night. To add spice to the situation, the Phi Gams upset Alpha Tau Omega last night. Now the DU's are in first place with a 4-1 record, the Phi Delts in second with a 3-1 record and the ATO's and Phi Gams tied for third with 3-2 records. Something has to give Monday night because the DU's tangle with the Phi Delts. The loser of this game will have to toss a coin with the ATO's and Phi Gams to see who is the other division representative in the fraternity playoffs. THE INDEPENDENT A leagues are pretty well settled. From Division I, the Cronies and HIDK will play for the league title. The Cronies defeated HIDK for the division title. In Division II, the JRP Guzzlers are in first with a 3-0 record. The Westerns, who have finished their season, stand 3-1. The Independents are 2-1 and their last game is with the Guzzlers. Division III will be represented by Joliffe and Stephenson, both undefeated. The tournament favorite is the Cronies, whose lineup includes three all-league choices last year in Mike Berkley, Morgan Metcalf and Stu Shandalove. Other team members are Lee Meier, Dick Hoagland, Jim Regen, Jack Hewitt and Bill Crank. Crank coaches the team. There are three undefeated teams in the Fraternity B leagues; Kappa Alpha Psi, Sigma Chi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Beta Theta Pi with a 4-1 record and Phi Gamma Delta with a 3-1 record are bidding for the other playoff berth in Division II. Sigma Nu and Alpha KappaLambda, each with 3-1 records, are fighting for the other berth from Division II. Sigma Nu, however, meets league leading Sigma Chi in its final game tonight. Delta Upsilon has a berth sacked up from Division II with a 3-1 record. THE PRE-TOURNAMENT favorite in the Fraternity B league is Kappa Alpha Fsi. Led by footballers Gale Sayers and Mike Shinn, who also played freshman basketball last year, the Kappa Alpha Psis are considered a sho-in for the championship. The Independent B league representatives are also fairly decided. V.I.C.E. has a bid in the bag, while Delta Function and MBA are batting for second with a 4-1 record. In Division II, the Gunners with a 4-0 record and the JRP Finks with a 3-1 record are the logical contenders for tourney berths. George Unseld, KU's 6-7 center and the leading scorer on the team, suffered a severe ankle sprain in practice last night. George Unseld Hurts Ankle in Practice The availability of Unseld for Saturday night's Oklahoma game here is uncertain. Last night there was much swelling in the ankle and Unseld was barely able to walk. KU Freshmen Meet Wildcats The class of Big Eight freshman basketball talent squares off against each other at Manhattan tonight. The KU freshmen, the best yearling unit KU has had in four years, tangles with an equally proficient Kansas State freshman club. Each team has one victory to its credit. The KU freshmen won their opener against Iowa State 67-48 and Kansas State defeated Nebraska 78-45. In both games, KU and K-State had four players in double figures. For KU, Steve Renko scored 23 points, Walter Wesley and Del Lewis 16 and Riney Lochmann 10. For Kansas State, Ron Paradis scored 21 points, Gary Williams, a 6-7 forward, scored 16 points and Larry guard, and Rov Smith, a 6-9 center, Weigel, a guard, and Roy Smith, a 6-9 center, each scored 10 points. A feature of tonight's game will be that two former high school teammates will be playing opposite each other. Del Lewis plays guard for KU; his running mate last year at Washburn Rural Ron Paradis will be at guard for the Wildcats. The series between the two schools' freshman clubs have been all or nothing the past two years. Last year, the Jayhawkers won both games, but the year before Kansas State won both. Wrestlers Make Mat Debut Tonight Reviving wrestling on a club level this year, KU will meet Kansas State tonight at Manhattan in the Jayhawkers' first mat competition since 1936. Twenty-one candidates have been working under Coach Bob Lockwood, Jayhawker gymnastics coach and assistant instructor of physical education. Delta Upson continues to lead the league with a 4-1 record. The Alpha Tau Omegas who were tied for second with Phi Delta Theta were dropped to a tie for third with the Phi Gams with a 3-2 record. Alpha Tau Omegas who were tied Phi Delta Theta is now in second place with a 3-1 record. The DU's and the Phi Delt's meet for the division championship at 6:15 Monday. There will be a coin toss between the loser and the ATO's and the Phi Gams to see who competes in the tournament, which starts Wednesday. Phi Kappa Theta continued its winning streak with a 51-42 record over the Sigma Nu. Barring defeat by sigma Phi Epsilon, which would be the upset of the year, the Phi Kappa Theta will win the division one title. The Cronies, who have wrapped up the division one title of the Independent A league defeated the Trumps 51-23, HIDK, who will be division one's other representative in the tournament defeated Templin 50-42.
