Capacity Audience Meets Warfield Bass baritone William Warfield sang a recital of Negro spirituals, contemporary songs and songs by Handel, Schubert, Wolf and Verdi for a capacity audience last night at the Concert Course. Page 3 Since his New York Town Hall debut recital in 1950, Warfield has been one of the world's leading singers. He has been on world concert tours which have taken him to Australia, Asia and Europe. WARFIELD SAID that touring keeps him busy, but that he wouldn't trade the experiences he has had and the people he has met for anything. Hard work has been a major factor in his success, Warfield said in an interview before his recital. "I have a conviction that people are basically the same everywhere." Warfield said. "They want their good side to show rather than their bad. Given any encouragement at all, they will show their good side. "My advice to any person beginning a career is to explore his chosen field thoroughly. Don't be satisfied with just passing grades, or even the highest mark," Warfield said. "If a person sets his goals high enough and works hard, nothing can stop him." "The more I travel, the more this conviction is strengthened." he said. He has appeared as Porgy in Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" and in the movie "Showboat," and he has been on television and made recordings with Eugene Ormandy, Bruno Walter and Leonard Bernstein. WARFIELD ALSO ATTRIBUTES much of his success to "the right doors just opening up." While in high school, he entered No Memory Problem Here TYN-Y-GOUGH, Wales — (UPI) — Owen Jones, 60, has filed a petition for divorce from his wife on grounds of misconduct committed in 1934 with a man now dead. a regional competition of the National Music Educators League.
