Crumpled wads of paper floated down onto the court as Allen Field House echoed with boos in the waning seconds of the KU-Oklahoma State basketball last night. The KU student section bitterly protested an official's decision that neither Jim Dumas or George Unseld were fouled beneath the KU basket as they attempted game-winning shots. VICTORY WAS within the Jayhawkers grasp as they gained possession of the ball with 22 seconds remaining to play, trailing 52-51. Coach Dick Harp immediately signaled for a timeout to plan the Jayhawkers' last shot. With 10 seconds remaining Dumas who had made two baskets in three attempts drove toward the basket. Amidst a conglomeration of players, he attempted a jump shot that was partially blocked. The ball was deflected into Unseld's hands, who also shot but fell short. The Oklahoma State players were scrambling viciously to keep the Jayhawkers from scoring, but the referees ruled that no infraction had been committed and KU's hopes for an upset subsided. ALLEN CORRELL intentionally fouled Larry Hawk with five seconds remaining so that KU could have one more opportunity with the ball. Hawk, however, calmly stepped to the line and made both shots giving the Cowboys a three point lead. to Unseld, who scored underneath the basket with one second remaining, as the Cowboys won 54-53. THE VICTORY kept Oklahoma State tied with Kansas State for second place with a 6-2 record. KU continued its hold on seventh place with a 2-6 record. The two teams played evenly throughout the game. The largest lead of the evening was six points held by OSU with eight minutes remaining in the game. The Cowboys led 27-28 at halftime. GEORGE UNSELD was the game's high scorer with 18 points. Nolen Ellison and Correll each made 10 points. Oklahoma State had four players in double figures. Larry Hawk scored 13, Jim King and Ivan Wiley, 12 each and James Cooper, 10. The Jayhawkers next Big Eight encounter is against the Oklahoma Sooners in Allen Field House Saturday night. In the first meeting between the two clubs, KU won by 31 points. Spring Football Begins Apr.15 KU will open spring football practice April 15 and close with the annual Varsity-Alumni game May 18.
