Reed Jr., editor and publisher of the Parsons Sun, today received the William Allen White Foundation Award for Journalistic Merit for a Kansas editor. The presentation was made by Dolph Simons Sr., editor of the Lawrence Journal-World, at a luncheon honoring the memory of White, the famed Emporia editor. Douglas County has been chosen to be a pilot area in a study of mental health facilities in Kansas. Douglas County Chosen as Site In Health Study The Bureau of Community Mental Health Services of the State Board of Social Welfare made the selection. The study is being made on a $50,000 grant from the United States Mental Health Service. It is designed to provide as a basis for formulation of a plan to co-ordinate all mental health facilities in the state. THE FIRST PHASE of the program, gathering information about mental health facilities, is to begin in Douglas County, one of the 20 districts into which the bureau divided the state. This district was chosen for several reasons. It is easily accessible from Topeka, where the Bureau offices are located. It is well orientated in an area that includes Menninger Clinic in Topeka and the KU Medical Center. Lawrence also has a long established Mental Health Clinic. Activity on this program will include four meetings, the first to be held from 2-4 p.m., March 4, in the Forum Room of the Kansas Union. The others will be on March 11, 18, and 25. Representatives from 30 organizations in the community who have an interest in the problem of mental health have been invited. These include such organizations as the University, the P.T.A., the County Health Department, and other civic groups. Patronize Your Kansan Advertisers "No one in the newspaper business in Kansas is respected more by his colleagues than the man we honor today." Simons said of Reed. He is truly in the pattern of Mr. White, whose birth date we are celebrating." REED IS CHAIRMAN of the State Board of Regents, a trustee of the White Foundation, and a past president of the organization. He received the White citation Clyde Reed, Jr. today for service to the profession and his community. In making the presentation, Simons said in a prepared talk: "IN RECENT MONTHS as state educational problems have developed, additional Kansans have learned that Clyde Reed is a fighter; in print, in committee sessions, and on the platform. People know what he thinks and what he stands for." In accepting the foundation's citation, Reed said in a prepared talk: "No substitute has yet been devised for the printed word in reporting faithfully, completely and honestly on the people and events in a newspaper's own community and, as far as resources will stretch, those of the state, nation and world."
