It is contagious and can be spread through the air, such as by coughing or drinking after an infected person. The incubation period is 4 to 5 days. The symptoms are described as sore throat, headache behind the eyes, fever, stiff neck and sometimes vomiting. Bacterial types of meningitis usually can be treated with antibiotics.
