5 University Daily Kansan / Thursday, April 27, 1989 Group distributes AIDS information by Merceda Ares Kansan staff writer Information about AIDS, condoms, intravenous drug use and vaginal blocks was distributed yesterday in Part Hall as part of Condom Sense Week. Becki Newburn, chairman of the Student Senate Task Force on AIDS, said that response to the booth had been positive. "There will be people who are offended anytime you talk about sexuality." Newborn said. "The point is, a lot of students at KU have died, and a lot are going to die. We are sure that information is distributed." Tables and posters were set up to provide information about ways to guard against AIDS. Posters on one table described the procedures to clean a hypodermic needle, another table had information about the purchase and use of condoms. A poster on a separate table described the procedure for making a vaginal block for protection during oral sex. Ann Suderman, Newton sophomore, said that the booth might embarrass some people. "It's an excellent idea if people will stop and look at it," Suderman said. A large poster with the title "Condom Use in the Real World" listed suggestions about how to avoid awkward situations. Tariq Mohabbat, Lawrence senior, said that promoting condom use was not the way to raise awareness about AIDS. One statement on the poster was, "I can't feel enough with a condom on." The suggested response was, "If you're going to get anything," you’re not going to be anything. "I'm 100 percent supportive of this program," Mohabbat said. "However, the solution is not condoms, it is condoms and using condoms is condoms a living vice." Shana Pearlmutter, St. Louis, Mo., sophomore, said she was not offended by the booth. "I think it's a start," Pearlmutter said. "I most definitely think there should be condom machines in the hallways and halls. People need it to be that easy. "If it does offend people, I probably wouldn't know them. People should wake up and realize how dangerous AIDS is." Kansan advertising does not cost, it pays Only Eight Performances!
