16 Wednesday, April 26, 1989 / University Daily Kansan KU employees honored at ceremony by Michele Logan Kenyon staff writer Kansan staff writer KU had its 13th annual employee recognition ceremony yesterday, and administrators distributed pins and Bibles. More than 600 faculty and staff were honored in the Kansas City Area, which committed 3,740 years of service to the University of the Kansas. "What unites us here today is that we all work for the University of Kansas and are all involved in the common enterprise of making education happen," said Frances McCullough, professor for research, graduate studies and public service. Horowitz said the ceremony was divided into two parts: the distribution of pins for years of service in multiples of five and the presentation of Employee of the Year awards. Pins are received for five to 40 years of Employee of the Year awards are given in two categories: classified occupations, which are state civil service employees, and unclassified occupations such as administrators and research assistants. "I am so excited that I won," Smith said. "I was really hoping that I would win, I just don't know what to think." Milledge Smith, administrative officer, was Employee of Millledge Smith, the former section. She was selected from drafts of four other sections. Patricia LaShier, assistant director of the Comprroller's office, won Employee of the Year for the unclassified section. A 15-member committee was appointed by the executive vice chancellor's office to select the winners "It was an honor to win, and the committee certainly kept it a message from me." LaShier said. Jazz groups begin tour to Colorado festival The Jazz Singers and Jazz Ensemble I began a five-day tour today, which will wind up in the Colorado Springs area of Northern Colorado, in Greeley, Colo Ron McCurdy, director of jazz studies, said the groups would perform in Salina, Phillipsburg, Cherry Creek High School in Englewood, Colo., and ultimately the festival. "The positive thing about the festival is that it's not competitive," McCurdy said. "The groups just do their best and learn from other groups. When you're always trying to win, I think it causes bad vibes." McCards said the groups had gone to the Wichita Jazz Festival in the past and had performed in Europe last summer.
