University Daily Kansan / Wednesday, April 26, 1989 11 Pap smears should be yearly in case test is falsely negative by Jennifer Corser Kansan staff writer Although 20 to 30 percent of Pap smears are false negatives, yearly tests can detect inaccuracies in time for treatment, a Watkins official said. Many college-age females have visited a doctor for a Pap smear. Doctors recommend that women older than 18 and those who are sexually active have a Pap smear. Both groups they have lesions or symptoms relating to the HPV virus. But because Pap smears are imperfect, they do not always find the abnormality. They can be difficult to diagnose. Walking Memorial Health Center. he said that 20 to 30 percent of negative tests were false negatives. This is why it is important for women to have Pap smears every year, he said. "Chances are, if the woman has a Pap smear every year, she's going to have one. He said he picked up the next year in plenty of time." he said. The general rule is that the HPV takes awhile to turn cancerous, if it even does, Buck said. HPV is a virus that infects the genital tract of men and women and is usually transmitted through sexual intercourse. Some types of HPV cause warts that change a woman's cervix, which is what the Pap smear tests. what the Fail sign told me. Last week, the state of California closed a laboratory. Central Pathology Services Medical Group of Tarzana, because it allegedly misdiagnosed two pap smears. The lab must pay to retire almost 700,000 women. Buck said such laboratories advertised to doctors across the country and processed too many tests in one day. day. False negative results can occur if the sample is inaccurate because the lesions on the cervix are small, he said. Also, because people check the specimens through microscopes, human error and eye strain could cause oversights. Nancy Litton, director of Roche Biomedical Laboratories in Kansas City, Mo., the lab that Watkins uses, said technologists were allowed to test only 80 to 100 Pap smears within 24 hours to reduce fatigue. Buck said Roche let him know when a test was inaccurate. accurate. "Some laboratories are afraid to do that because the daftail doctor will get mad," he said. "That's not honest. If you don't have a good specimen you should say something." Despite the the Pap smears' inaccuracies in negative diagnosis, they have good accuracy when showing positive results. Buck said. poor. "I think women should feel fairly secure with their Pap smears," he said. For Seniors Only...
