Pap smears should be yearly in case test is falsely negative

Although 20 to 30 percent of Pap smears are false negatives, yearly tests can detect inaccuracies in time for treatment, a Watkins official said.
Many college-age females have visited a doctor for a Pap smear. Doctors recommend that women older than 18 and those who are sexually active have a Pap smear. Both groups they have lesions or symptoms relating to the HPV virus.

Nancy Litton, director of Roche Biomedical Laboratories in Kansas City, Mo., the lab that Watkins uses, said technologists were allowed to test only 80 to 100 Pap smears within 24 hours to reduce fatigue.
