Cameron Hurst, director of the Center for East Asian Studies, will lead the group on a six-week seminar on doing business in East Asia. The purpose of the trip, Hurst said, is to help professors bring an international touch to the courses they already teach and a more sophisticated international expertise to the school. The group will leave Lawrence on July 4. Hurlst and, spend 25 days in Japan and 17 days in Korea. The group will return to the academic sponsor in each country. "It seemed that we would have to demonstrate to the funding agency that we were well plugged into the program." Hurst said. "So we obtained both business and academic sponsors." Professors participating in the program must have previously demonstrated interest in teaching or researching international business and had to agree to enhance the cultural dimensions of their teaching or research with information from the trip, said Carol Rose, grant winner for the Institute for Public Policy and Business Research. 75 $ ^{¢} $ Draws The Fulbright-Hays grant was the first of its kind awarded to the School of Business. "These programs are highly cultural in content." Rose said. "We had the feeling that maybe the great need for cultural information for business hadn't been appreciated by participants in the program before." Hurst said final plans for the trip were pending. The professors may visit an auto factory or shipyard and possibly attend a planning board meeting of one of the firms that will be visited. A $64,000 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad grant will finance the trip. sponsors, Hurst said. "Ageeich Shimizu, executive vice president for Nippon International (a branch of NT&T), graduated from KU in the 1980s," he said. "And at the organization, two attended KU." "We're hopeful of meeting a lot of different business leaders while we're there," he said. "We'll also just need to be open to our experiences because you can't prepare for everything in advance." Other professors going on the trip with Hurst and Houston include: Jill Kleinkein, assistant professor of business; John Lastovicka, associate professor of business; George Pinches, professor of business; Anthony Redwood, executive director for the Institution for Public Affairs; Joseph Researcher Surendra Singh, associate professor of business; Rajendra Srivastava, associate professor of business; Marilyn Taylor, associate professor of business; and Daniel Spencer, associate professor of business. Doug Houston, director of the business graduate program, will go on the trip. KU has connections with all four sponsors. Hurst said. Tokyo, and Nippon Telephone and Telegraph, also in Tokyo.
