South Dakota city may revive economy by gambling on past
DEADWOOD, S.D. — Gambling proved fatal for Deadwood's most famous resident, Wild Bill Hickok, but local leaders are hoping it can revive the economy in this historic Black Hills town.

Deadwood residents voted yesterday on a measure to legalize poker, blackjack and slot machines, with proceeds to be used to restore and preserve the town's historic buildings and public facilities.
"I feel good about it." Mayor Tom Blair said before the votes were counted.
Under an amendment to the South Dakota Constitution last year, gambling limited to $5 bets would be allowed in the cedarwood's votes the apporos.
Some Deadwood residents quietly opposed a return to gambling on moral grounds.
Supporters contended it would help make Deadwood and the rest of the Black Hills a final destination for tourists, instead of just a stop on the way to Yellowstone National Park and the Rocky Mountains.

Blair predicted gambling could attract at least 200,000 additional tourists a year to Deadwood. He said it could provide $500,000 annually to further promote tourism by restoring the city, which is a city founded when miners flooded the area after the 1876 discovery of gold in Deadwood Gulch.
