Kansas' dotted line still open for basketball letter of intent Probation has Jayhawks searching for junior college players College basketball's national letter of intent period begins today, but Kansas may not have any signings to announce. None of the nine players considering Kansas is close to making a decision, according to their coaches. Because of the terms of Kansas' three-year NCAA probation, the Jahawks are unable to offer paid visits to prospective recruits. Van Coleman, publisher of the National Guard's regulations forced the Jahawks to concentrate on recruiting junior college players. "Recriting of junior college kids starts so early," Coleman said. "They're usually in their second week of visits at this time." Kansas signed one player, point guard Adonis Jordan of Reseda (Calif.) Cleveland High School, during the first signing period in November, as Coach Roy William has said the Jayhawks could sign two more players. Coleman said junior college players were generally not ready to sign letters of intent on the first day of the period. The period will end May 15. Peter Martin, a 7-foot, 252-inch center from UUAh Community College last weekend became the fifth player to cancel a recruiting visit. Williams has said four players visits during the early signing period. Utah Valley coach Duke Reid said Martin had decided to attend Fresno State. Coleman said the cost of recruiting visits might harm the Jayhawks recruiting. He estimated that the cost of recruiting players who have ranged between $800 and $1,000. "It's just a situation where they are recruiting kids who are too far away to visit." Coleman said. "Then the players) have to make a decision based on whether they like or not to attend other schools they are considering." The Jayhawks recruiting for one of the scholarships seems to focus on four junior college big men Anderson (S.C.) College center Larry McCloud, Pratt Community College forward Shawn Jhamison, Compton (Calif) Community College centerforward Roy Williams and Allen County Community College forward Ryan Thornton. 6-11 McCloud, ranked 23rd nationally among junior college players by Sporting News Magazine. He was named to five bounds and five blocked shots a game. Pritch coach Gary Thomas said Jamison would probably decide among Kansas, San Diego State and West Virginia next week. The 6-8, 20-20 pound power forward averaged 17.7 points and 8.4 rebounds a game "He has good hands and runs and jumps well." Anderson coach Steve Lynton said. "He also has a good shooting touch." Roy "Kingdom" Williams averaged 12 points and 10.2 rebounds a game Williams, 6-8, 230 pounds, has organized the national basketball for two years. Thomas said Williams had visited Idaho State and San Diego State and planned to visit Southern California. He said Kansas had expressed interest in Williams and Compton guard Adrian Jackson. Jackson averaged 15 points, four rebounds and 3.1 assists a game. The 6-3, 180-pound off guard made 40 of his shots from three-point range. Thornton and point guard Carl Weldon have made unofficial visits to Kansas, Allen County coach Neil Crane said. Thornton, 6-4, 20 pounds, averaged 21 points and eight rebounds a game. He led the Jayhawk Jaco Conference in field-goal percentage (70 percent) and made 90 percent of his free throws. "He's a very explosive player and a very good shooter up to 17 feet," Crane said. Crane said Thornton also was considering Kansas State, Colorado and three other schools. Crane said Weldon would choose between Kansas, Nebraska and Virginia Commonwealth. The 6- guard team was the top defensive averaged 15.1 points and 6.2 assists. Nationally ranked guard B.J. Carter of Arizona Western College said his top four schools were Kansas, Florida, Boston College and Kansas State. Carter, ranked 16th, averaged 18 points and 11 assists a game. The Jayhawks also are recruiting two high school guards, Earl Jones of Tulsa McLain High School and Val Barnes of Wichita High School.
