The works, by Benedetto Luti, an early 18th-century Italian artist, are estimated to have been painted in 1714. "The Education of Cupid" shows Mercury, messenger of the gods, and Venus, the goddess of love and affection, the infant Cupid in the ways of love. John Wilson, curator of Europe and American art at the museum, said mythological characters were popular subjects because they often were portrayed made and in a landmark painting to explore both subjects. The other painting, "Atalanta and Hippimones," portrays a foot race between the characters. Atalanta was a princess who vowed never to marry unless she could be defeated in such a race. Those who competed against her and lost were put to death. Venus gave Hippimones three gold apples, which he dropped at strategic times during the race. Atlanta was distracted by their beauty and stopped to pick them up. She lost them to Hippimones, and they married "They are a strength in an area we have, in 18th-century Italian art, and it is good to build on that strength," said Wilson. "But they also fill a gag because we don't have any other works by Luti." The paintings are reductions of Luti's large canvases of the same subjects at the Weissenstein palace at Pommerselfen in Germany, his works outside Italy. The painting is one of their original Pommerselfen frames. Lothar Franz von Schoenborn, a German noble, commissioned the paintings from Luti. The paintings are either later reductions of the large canvases or preparatory studies for them. At some point, the Pommersfelden "Education of Cupid" was cut down, so the museum's version illustrates the picture's original appearance. Wilson said Luti's paintings were interesting examples of cross-cultural work because Luti traveled outside of Italy to work in Germany. The paintings are gifts from Uma Kreider, a 1920 KU graduate. Kreider and her late husband, Karl, a 1919 KU graduate, lived in Lawrence until 1975, when the museum was still in its planning stages. "We thought, 'Wouldn't it be nice to be a tiny part of it?' " she said. Kreider, who lives in Boulder, Cola, said she was impressed with the Spencer family's contribution of her research to Library Research and also the museum. Kreider said she didn't want her contribution to be part of a general fund, but instead something more individual. She requested that her gift be used to purchase a painting or sculpture. "I'm not an art critic or an art student. I just like pretty things," she said.
