8 Wednesday, April 12, 1989 / University Daily Kansan Center prepares Spring 1990 enrollment by Candy Niemann Kansan staff writer While KU students only have to deal with enrollment once every semester, the enrolment center works year round to get ready for the Edith Guffey, assistant director of student records, said the center already was preparing for Spring 1990 enrollment. Timetables for Spring 1990 were sent to departments shortly after Spring Break, starting several rounds of mailings and returns used to verify and correct classes, class times, rooms and instructors. Before the actual enrollment process, the center hires eight to 10 temporary workers to work at the terminals, augmenting the eight full-time employees already at the center. The employees are trained to use the terminals, deal with the pressure and handle angry students. "We tell them that the students' anger is not really meant to be directed at them, that the students are used to get with their situation," Guffey said. Shelley Gehrke, keyboard operator, has been working at the center since July. "Sometimes you get an irate student, but considering how many people we put through it, here it goes fairly smoothly." Gehrke said. Guffey said it was not uncommon for students to get upset while at the center, but they seldom became verbally abusive. "But there have been a few times where I have just had to ask someone to leave. Guiley said, 'Anyone with it will often is going to have that happen.'" Guffey most students who got angry needed to understand that the enrollment center only followed polling set by other units in the University. "And we realize that sometimes we should make an exception, and we do," she said. "Enrollment can be stressful for our office, but we always know it is stressful for the students, too." She said enrollment had been running more smoothly the past year, in part due to a test program set up for students enrolled in College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Using five computers set up in the rotunda at Strong Hall, students can compare their student records to requirements for different degrees and the courses offered on the current timetable. Guffey said that of all the temporary workers she hired this spring, only one employee was new. "Most of them want to come back," she said. "For people that work nights or maybe just want seasonal work, it is a good temporary job because they know we will always be here and enrollment."
