A University Daily Kansan / Wednesday, April 12, 1989 5 St. Peter helps others through leadership - Continued from p. 1 self-discipline and community spirit, which he does." Brehm said. Although her son did not receive a scholarship, he got. Peter said she was delighted about the program and felt proud of her work. "A Rhodes Scholar is not just attending classes at Oxford University; it is being an exceptional person," she said. "In my mind, Steve is a Rhodes Scholar." St. Peter's father, Don St. Peter, said his son frequently argued for Democratic platforms in a predominately Republican family. He said his son, who had won key arguments in political debates, had a keen interest in political topics as well as in people. "He has always been interested in people." Don's face is serious. He cares about how they are feeling and does it. Givens, professor of chemistry and St. Peter's academic advisor, was most impressed with how St. Peter utilized his interest in people to assist them with academics. "There were more labs than graduate teaching assistants this year, so a group of faculty choose some of the top students in the department to teach them." Certainly, certainly been one of the more outstanding ones. Kay St. Peter said her son had always pushed the limits of his knowledge. Last summer, St. Peter worked at the Kemp Research Center in Denver. He worked at Children's Hospital and investigated causes of preterm births. St. Peter was active in researching a quantitative sampling method to be used in the research of preterm birth and preterm labor, said Dave Kemp, director of the research laboratories at Kemp. "We were very impressed with Steve," Lawwellin said. "He approached his project reasonably and logically, and his end results where what the doctors had hoped for." St. Peter said he would be returning to Denver for a second summer with the research center, collecting data and preparing a manuscript for publication. Less than 24 hours after St. Peter learned of his selection as a state representative in the Rhodes competition, he was notified he had been chosen to be a Hilltoner. Although St. Peter said he was unsure why he was selected, he thought the Hilltop award did a good job of recognizing different types of leadership in the KU community. Five to 10 outstanding seniors are selected each year by the editors of the Yearbook to be Hilltoppers. Qualifications include campus and community involvement and leadership. "When I consider the people selected, I feel absolutely confident to be associated with that group," Peter said. Sara Dennehy, Stuina, Okla., senior, is vice president for the organization and senior society for which St. Peter serves as president. Dennehye has known St. Peter since her freshman year at KU and has always been impressed "He was probably the first person I got to know he was friendly and not out because he was so friendly and easy to approach." St. Peter's older brother, Bob, served as president of Mortar board in 1911 and was a member of the same fraternity, Beta Theta Fl. St. Peter was also a graduate from John, for setting high standards for him to follow. st. Peter is an unselfish person who demon- states a major concern for others, Bob St. Peter said. "It fits him well that he is interested in improving the delivery of health care to underprivileged people," Bob St. Peter said. St. Peter said he would eventually attend medical school, but would prefer to spend next year in the job. "It is very appropriate that Steve is going into a form of medicine," she said. "He is concerned about the welfare of others and really wants to help and benefit people." Kay St. Peter said her son would always be thinking of others before himself. "On his graduation announcements he has requested that no gifts be provided," Ray St. Peter said. "He does not want to hurt anyone by not giving him gifts, because the same sense he does not want the recognition." 82.3% of KU Students read the Kansan AAA Automotive Electrical & Air Conditioning Spring Special New batteries $25.00 UP Wiring work, alt., starters E. 9th 842-5884 - Pick up 1980-1988 yearbooks this week if you have already paid.
