Computer Center offering virus cures

They're like the police inside your computer . . . but different.
With names like "KillScores," "Interferon," "Ferret," and "Virex," these are programs that can keep your computer free of the dreaded computer viruses that keep cropping up on campus.
Doug Hecock, user education specialist at the Computer Center, said computer viruses were the work of vandals who entered the viruses into computers to destroy other users' programs.
"It's the computer hacker's means of slashing tires," Heacock said.
He said computer viruses acted like viruses in humans.
"The virus enters the computer through a contaminated disk, where it attaches itself to information
already in the computer." Heacock said. "Then, it starts to duplicate."
Once duplicated, the infected material begins infecting the material around it, he said. The virus then spreads to any other disk entered into it.
But there is a cure. Haecko said programs targeted at finding and killing specific viruses were available through the Computer Center. Students would protect computers from viruses and even cure most damage done.
Paul Crabtree, an academic computing services employee, said that he routinely found two or three cases of virus contamination on campus each week. He said many viruses came from residence hall computers.
But viruses differ, he said. Just as one comes to be erased, another often comes along to take its place.
"nVir A and B are the two common viruses on campus right now," said Crabtree, Lawrence junior.
One of the two viruses may have been the culprit yesterday when Stephen Kline, Omaha, Neb., sophomore, attempted to enter a disk into a computer at Kinko's Copies, 622 West 12th St.
"I put the disk into the machine and a message came on the screen that said, 'There is an error on your computer. You want to correct it.' "Kline said.
He said employees at Kinkeo's told him his disk was contaminated and would not allow him to use their equipment.
Later, a search of the computers at Stauffer-Flint Hall, where Kline had used his disk earlier, did turn up both nVir A and nVir B viruses.
