The deadline for out-of-state students was Feb. 1, and KU has admitted more out-of-state students than the one at Lice Lindvall, director of admissions. Lindwall said applications from instate students, due tomorrow, had decreased slightly while application and transfer students had increased. "We are aiming at having a new freshman class of about 4,000," he said. The first year KU experienced a freshman class of more than 4,000 students was 1986, and 1987 was its biggest year ever with a freshman class of 4,362. Last year's class was 3,782. "In 1987 we had to establish emergency deadlines, and those became permanent in 1988," Lindall said. "We are the only public institution in Kansas with deadlines." Before 1987, students could apply to the University at any time. An exceptions committee reviewed about 800 applications last summer. Slightly fewer than half of those students enrolled at KU. "We will review cases again this year," Lindvall said. "The gate is not wide open, but it is not completely shut either." Norman Clifford, research associate for the Institute of Public Policy and Research, said the U.S. inflation rate for 1988 was 4.1 percent. That same year, tuition at KU increased 4 percent for in-state students and 9 percent for out-of-state students. "But as long as we remain a bargain, people will continue to apply," Lindvall said.
