Palestinians want peace, speaker says Breakfast Served Anytime He said the PLO was organized to reconstruct the Palestinian nation. "The PLO came about to provide the Palestinian with his identity," he said. "And within the institution of the PLO, we found an intra-structure to identify ourselves as Palestinians." The PLO is not a political party Rahman said. Andrea Katzman, Lawrence sophomore, disagreed. Katzman is a Jewish American who has visited Israel several times. "The PLO is a framework of Palestinian nationalism. The PLO unified the Palestinians under one flag and the same national framework," he "The PLo is a national organization, and the reason I say that is because the PLo wants to form a Palestinian state with the PLo at its head," she said. "So, obviously, they're a political party and they claim to represent all Palestinians in the national forum." Leon Veley, Chicago sophomore, agreed with Rahman that American Jews have debated about violence against Palestinians. "It's true that American Jews and Israelis alike are agonizing over the Palestinian situation because Jews as a whole are sympathetic to oppression," she said. "In this situation, with regard, they have to protect themselves from an uprising that could destroy the Israeli state." Rahman said peace was impossible in an occupied territory. Robertson said a crucial condition of any restraining order issued should be the barring of the newspaper's publication. we'll get some idea of what's going on." Gordon Risk, president of the ACLU in Kansas, said one problem with the case was that the student paper had not been published for several months. When they got to the courtroom, Robertson and Nichols were informed that Jenny James, one of the students who had signed the petition, would no longer support it. "It is difficult to know the extent of student harassment," he said. "If the students can begin to publish a legitimate student newspaper, hopefully James was student managing editor for the Indian Leader from August 24, 1988 to January 19, 1989. She said she withdrew because she disagreed with Robertson's actions. I'm still for student rights and the First Amendment. James said 'but the way he went in there, and then he sat down.' Stevens, current student managing editor, said she would include the stories she had assigned with stories Hills had ready for publication. "It was never my intention to take anything out of the dummy sheets," she said. Robertson submitted the dummy sheets to the court as evidence. Kansan reporter Merceda Ares contributed information to this story.
