Winter's workouts put football players in better condition
Program builds strength, cuts injuries

The Kansas football team is reaping benefits from a winter conditioning program that has worked well, and the Kansas speed and strength coach.
Roll said conditioning was critical for prevention of player injury and for recovery once injury had occurred.
"We try to emphasize both strength and speed." Roll said. "We build as much bulk strength as we can, emphasizing explosive parts of the body such as the lower back and upper hamstrings.
"We've had no serious injuries during spring practice, knock on wood."
The winter program was only part of a yearlong training regimen for the team.
Roll said the program ran all year in four parts, including a non-competition phase lasting from January until spring practice, a pre-competition phase lasting from June until August, a competition phase during the season and a transitional phase during Christmas break.
"We've made tremendous progress in every aspect of our total program." Roll said. "We've still got a long way to go. We need to keep working on developing working habits. I have no doubt the players are dedicated to the conditioning program."

"It's a completely different type of exertion." Buddse said. "We come out here on the field in the spring, and we learn that we wear during the winter. It's aerobic."
On March 18 in Phoenix, Ariz. Bude won the National Collegiate Weightlifting Tournament in his weight class by lifting a combined 60 pounds in two events. He set both the heaviest and Kansas records with the lifts.
Lynn Bott, director of sports medicine for the team, said only a few minor injuries had occurred since the start of spring practice a week and a month ago.
"Last season, we played a lot harder late in the game because of improved conditioning. "Budde said. This ability helps you stay away from injury."
He said second-team All-Big-Eight Conference linebacker Curtis Moore, a 6-1, 232-pound junior, had a hyperextended left knee and a 60-200-pound sophomore linebacker Paul Friday had an upper back muscle tear. He said injuries were not serious but neither had been able to practice recently.
