Thursday, March 30, 1989 / University Daily Kansan New York City dance company keeps its performance in motion by Christine Winner Kansan staff writer Two figures on stage, a man and a woman, performed simple gestures that escalated into a dizzying array of arm movements. Slowly, the two incorporated more of a human touch in their performance to the audience a climax of the relationship between them. Susan Marshall and Company performed "Arms" and four other modern dance pieces last night in Hoch Another dance, "Companion Pieces," was performed in three parts, with a couch used as a prop. In the first scene, a girl tries to convince a boy to play a game with her, but it is obvious he has something quite different in mind. A couple tickled, teased, snugged and pouted their way through the second scene. The third scene featured three adolescentes dancing and mugging in a mirror to Percy Sledge's song, "When a Cat Cries." Janette Karn, Wathena senior, said "The Aerialist" was her favorite piece. She said the slow-motion movements made it seem like a dream and that the music added an eerie quality. Kathy Duffiel, Plains senior, said she came to the program because it was a dance class requirement. "I didn't think I was going to like it, but I think it's really intriguing," she said. Other pieces performed included "Interior with Seven Figures" and "Arena." The group began touring in 1985 and has appeared at dance festivals throughout the United States and Europe. The company, which was formed in 1983, performs throughout New York City and has danced to sold-out audiences for three seasons at the Dance Theatre Workshop, known for its presentation of new companies. and taught at the 18th and Ethiopia. Marshall, who began choreographing studies at the Jullillard School of Music in New York City. Since then she has received commissions for her work from both modern dance and ballet companies.
