But for those trying to find out the latest trends, here's what students and local merchants said were today's cool styles and yesterday's fading fashion at KU.

What's hot
Boxer shorts; Toss out the old VD and bikini underwear. Boxer shorts are now the underwear of choice for men.

"I used to wear tight underwear, but now I wear boxers," said Chris Herrmann, Overland Park sophomore. "It's kind of cool, kind of comfortable. The girls like them."
Bicycle shorts: The skin-tight shorts that cyclists have been wearing for more than 20 years have been seen on even those who don't own a bike.

Ron Lathrop, manager of Lawton Wynn Cyclery, 1601 W. 23rd St., said that nonbicyclists seemed to prefer the brightly colored bicycle shorts instead of the standard black shorts.

Taped shoes: Don't throw away those worn-out tennis shoes just because they're falling apart. Use a piece of duct tape to hold them together.

- Other trendy items: Cut-off, rolled-up jeans, similar to those worn by Jennifer Grey in the movie "Dirty Dancing," hair accessories such as headbands, scarves and berets; and Ray-Ban pilot glasses, especially ones with green-tinted lenses. Also, look for neon swimwear to be popular this summer.
"I think everything's going in 20-year cycles," said Sherwin Warren, McPpherson Jr. "Right now, the '60s are in. In the 90's, disco is going to be back."

Hard Rock Cafe T-shirts: The once-popular shirts from different locations of the trendy restaurant chain have been laid to rest.
