14 Wednesday, March 8, 1989 / University Daily Kansan Minority scholarship program enters 10th year by Scott Achelpohl Kansan staff writer As the KU Endowment Meri Awards for minor students program celebrates its ten anniversary this semester, KU administrators and minority students yesterday heralded its importance. David Ambler, vice chancellor for academic affairs, said the start of the program and its initial success 10 years ago could be attributed to hard work by his friend. Ambler supervised the program and maintains it today. "Some of my staff people had a good idea and I tried to support it by going to recruiting events for the program." Amber said. The program is financed by the Kansas University Endowment Association and operates from the offices of Educational Services. Milton Scott, assistant director of admissions and coordinator of the scholarship program, said the students were divided into two different areas. "I have a summer job to help pay for my education," she said. "I would have to work during the school year as well to be able to afford college. I also don't think I would have to learn the kind of grades I have without it." Selleck said she was a national Hispanic semifinalist when she was offered the scholarship by KU. In the first area, National Achievement semifinalists and National Hispanic semifinalists receive $1,300 annually, Scott said. Dania Morales, Overland Park sophomore, said the scholarship made the difference between attending and not attending KU.
