Watkins Health Center documents its highest number of reported cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) immediately following Spring break. All are transmitted by unsafe sexual activity, and one can acquire AIDS just as easily as gonorrhea or any other STD. Abstinence is still the best defense against the sexual transmission of AIDS. If, however, you choose to be sexually active over Spring Break, whether it be AIDS or some other STD, your best defense is a condom. So when you're packing your bags for Spring Break, if you think you might be sexually active, throw in a few condoms. It could make the difference between the vacation of your life or the vacation that ended your life. Condoms are available at the pharmacy in Watkins Health Center, three for $ 50^{\circ} $ . Kansan staff writer Kim Dayton, a member of the joint committee, said the University's maternity policy could be the most serious The joint committee has addressed the issue because of an American Council of Education report titled "The Importance of Social Studies in Schools." He has no pardition or maternity policy, she said. "It is sorely in need of revision," said Dayton, associate professor of law. "If the University values the mother as an institution, it has to re-evaluate (its) policy." The report addresses maternity and paternity leave policies and problems of sexual discrimination and harassment on college campuses. It also examines professional conduct, as well as specific issues related to minority women. However, Dayton said many of these concerns would be harder to trace, and the results could be found only after sample interviews with women faculty and students. Dayton said the research assistant would conduct the main interviews and document other anecdotal incidents related to harassment and other issues affecting women's experiences at the University. The joint committee is asking for $5,750 for a half-time research assistant to conduct those interviews. The rest of the information would be taken from annual University reports. Davenport said. Another $2,100 was requested by the joint committee for a student hourly clerk. The remaining $250 would be used for supplies. Jerry said the University could present a symposium to discuss the joint committee's concerns as early as Fall 1990. Storage space for data and space for conducting interviews also would be needed, she said. concern. "This is one of several issues, all of which are very important, that give members of the University community — regardless of gender, race, or national origin — a full opportunity to participate in all aspects of the University," Jerry said. Bob Jerry, chairman of SenEx, said that although there was no existing budget for research in University governance, the effort to address this issue was a concern. He said the symposium would include in-depth discussion of issues, featuring the most current scholarly opinions. Beer sale near church vote ends in tie by Carrie Harper Kansan staff writer A tie vote forced the commission to take no action on a request by Kwik Shop for a variance to the city code for a proposed shop at the Orchards Corner Shopping Center, 15th Street and Kasold Drive. Commissioners Dennis Constance and Mike Rundle dissented. Lawrence City Commissioners last night split on whether to allow a proposed convenience store to sell convenience beverages within 400 feet of a church. The church involved is the Bible Baptist Church, 1449 Kasold Dr., which is on the opposite corner of the intersection. John Immel, a Lawrence attorney representing Kwik Shop, said the 400-foot requirement was strictly local, and state law did not require that distance between the sites. Immel mentioned other cities, such as Manhattan and Topeka, where the requirement was 200 feet or less. Immel questioned the 1987 amendment to the ordinance that changed the method of measuring from walk Immel told the commission that if it did not grant Kwik店's waiver it would be demonstrating an inconsistency because it already had granted a waiver for a liquor store in the same shopping center. "We don't see how the sale of cereal malt beverages would adversely impact the safety and health of the citizens of Lawrence." Ipmel said. ing distance to direct distance. Immel also said that several existing convenience and grocery stores violated the requirement and had not acquired waivers, according to city records. Immel said that uniformity among the Kwik Shops was vital and the store would not be developed unless it was insured by a malt beverage license from the city. David Clevees, director of store development for Kwik Shop Inc. in Hutchinson, said that cereal malt beverage sales represented only about 3 percent of each store's sales. He said that because the beverages would not be sold on Sunday, it would not conflict with church activities. Greg McGee, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church, said that the church was active during the week and the pastor made cereal malt beverage so nearby. "All crimes against innocent people can many times be traced back to alcoholic beverages," McGee said. Ralph Gage, moderator of the First Baptist Church, 1330 Kasold Dr., said the law recognized that certain kinds of property used did not mix. "It's not simply a matter of morality," Gage said. "It's a matter of litter, trash, traffic and noise." Louise Silber, chairman of the Hidden Valley Girl Scout Committee that owns a 40-acre camp on 15th Street just past the Kasol intersection, wrote a letter to the commission expressly asking that the committee increase alcohol sales would increase vandalism and unauthorized use of the camp. Mayor Bob Schumm scheduled discussion on the questions of inconsistency in the ceral malt beverage ordinance for March 28. It was 36 years in the making... CHERISH THE CHAMPIONSHIP For posterity!
