"The staff wants to do it," she said. "I think it's like a tradition. Athletes realize that they're gifted and want to work with other people to help them develop to their fullest potential." Sharon Galley, mother of Kevin, a Special Olympian, said her son participated in the Shawnee Mission Special Olympics program. This is the second year he has participated in the KU clinic. "He just loves it," Galley said. "He recognizes certain names from watching games on TV, and the guys are so." Galley said the University of Missouri-Kansas City put on a basketball championship Special Olympics few weeks after his graduation. UCI climbs. She said the athletes participated in a lot of drills and really enjoyed them, but they didn't recognize games like they did at college. the players here." "I'm here today to see what Kevin learns," she said. "But I think the biggest experience for him is the exposure to the players and being in Allen Field House." Irene Eden, grandmother of KU forward Brad Kampschroepner, said she thought the clinic was a marvelous idea. She came to the clinic to watch kampschreeped because he had been looking forward to "The coach (Williams) is such a great guy," she said. "He was closing his eyes and shooting and missing. He was making all the kids laugh." Dainen Summers, a Special Olympian from Kansas City, Kan., said he liked the clinic. He already had met some of the KU players because his dad was a referee in the Big Eight Conference. "The team thoroughly enjoys this clinic," he said. "It's our chance to give something back to the community." KU guard Kevin Prichard said the clinics put on by Brown and Willingham, although he thought they were better organized. "It was better organised." Pritchard said the Special Olympians gave more affection than a lot of people would think possible. The players can meet a Special Olympian at the beginning of a training camp or in a two-hour clinic, he could be hugging the same athlete. the anties know us and know so much about us," Pritchard said. "And they're all honest. I had a little kid talking to me today about why ya'll been insulted? I told him that the one last night, and that cheered him up some." Pritchard said the team had gotten compliments on its win from the many Special Olympians who kept up with KU basketball. Dancing for the health of it, aerobic exercisers participate in 'Dance for Heart' at Body by Schilebe, 2223 Louisiana St. Sororities aerobicize at benefit by Michele Logan Kansan staff writer In an effort to raise funds for the American Heart Association's cardiovascular research and education programs, Panhellenic Association sponsored a "Dance for the Heart" on Saturday. Members from KU's 14 sororites and some members of Body By Schliebe participated in aerobic workouts from 10:45 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. Dancers collected donations and were sponsored a certain monetary amount for each minute they danced. Participants did not have to stay the entire length of the event. Trisha Harris, vice president of Panhellenic, said about 150 girls signed up for the event, not including walk-in members from Body by Schleibe, a fitness club at 2223 Louisiana St. "I think everyone will collect at least $10, but Panhellenic didn't set a goal for the amount we wanted to raise." Harris said. "But last year Panhellenic collected $1,200 and we made at least $1,500 this year." As added incentives for the participants, prizes were awarded to everyone who collected between $15 and $500. Prizes included a water bottle, T-shirt, towel, stopwatch, tote bag and a sweatshirt. The value of each prize corresponded to the amount of money the dancer collected. Body By Schiele conducted three separate classes for the event. The first class lasted an hour and included a workout with weights; the second class included an hour of low impact aerobics; and the third class included one and a half hours of high impact aerobics. The dancer who raises the most money exceeding $500 wins either a 10-speed bicycle or an AM/FM game player in addition to other offers. Jan Sandoval, Overland Park sophomore, and Christy Blackshire, Kansas City, Kan., sophomore, danced the entire three and one-half "I wanted to dance the whole time because it was such a challenge for me." Sandoval said. "Working out with the weights was the hardest thing, and I'm paying for it today." Mary Maras, Overland Park junior, said she tried to dance the entire time, but got too tired and quit around 1 p.m. Blackshire agreed. "I felt more energized after it was over," she said, "but my arms were like rubber bands after using the weights." "When I picked up the weights, I said out loud that I thought they were so light, and this other girl said, 'Just you wait,' and I found out what she meant by that later when I could barely move," she said. Harris said Panhellenic had been planning the event since Christmas. "The American Heart Association had a target month of November for the dance, but that would've been thanksgiving and final," Harris said.
