Kansas softball faces tough weekend series

Winning the Big Eight Conference softball title is not easy.
The top five teams in the Midwest regional rankings are from the Big Eight, and the conference quickly is gaining a strong national reputation
Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Nebraska all can be considered title contenders, and Kansas coach Kalum Haack says the conference race would be tighter than ever. The fifth team ranked, Iowa State, is not considered a contender
"Nebraska was just missing a pitcher of her caliber," Haack said. "They have a really improved look with her in there. She's really helped to turn their program around. I think that both Nebraska and Oklahoma State have really solid teams."
The hot team is Nebraska, sparked by the addition of junior college transfer Stacy Stafford.
Oklahoma State is an experienced team with 10 seniors, highlighted by All-American Kim Ward. The Oklahoma Sooners also boast a senior lineup, and Haack stressed that the Sooners' record was not an indication of their strength.
"This year the conference is wide open," Haack said. "There is not one dominant team. There is more parity in our conference than ever before."
"Their record may not be as good, but they've beaten some good teams. And they have a senior-laden ballclub," he said. "Both Oklahoma and Missouri have better teams than their records indicate."

"All we need to do is put everything together on the same day," she said. "We're still not where we need to be for the season, but we're playing a lot better than we were. We will get it together."
Kansas opens a four-game weekend series against the Missouri Tigers at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Jayhawk Field. The series concludes Sunday in Columbia, Mo.
Kansas sophomore pitcher Tiffany Blood agreed with Haack, and she said the Jayhawks soon would play better.
Haack said that the Jayhawks' recent 2-3 road trip had shown an improved Kansas team, and that his No.16 Jayhawks have a realistic shot at the title.
"Even though we went to California and came back 2-3, we played a lot better than we did early on," he said. "I think we're starting to turn the corner at just the right time. We're playing a lot better, now that we're going into conference play."
"There are no more dominant teams in the Big Eight, and I'm encouraged by the improvement that I see. We proved that we can hang with any team in the nation."
