Tissue found in Vietnam may be that of U.S. jet pilot
Flesh rare find 25 years after the fatal crash
The Associated Press
HANOI, Vietnam — Investigators digging in a remote jungle believe that for the first time they have found body tissue from an American serviceman killed in the Vietnam War, an anthropologist with the team said
yesterday.
U. S. and Vietnamese specialists found the remains while excavating a site near the Cambodian border where an F-4 fighter jet crashed in 1970, said Air Force Maj. Randall Garrett.
"It could be a hand or a foot. That's about all we know at this point." Robert Mann told The Associated Press after examining the remains.
The pilot is believed to have died in the crash, said Garrett, operations officer for the U.S.MIA office in Hanoi.
"The likelihood of finding possible human tissue after 25 years is so small that no one ever really thought about preparing for it."
Previous field excavations have uncovered pieces of bones and teeth, enabling experts to identify 56 remains since January 1992.
said Garrett, who visited the site 90 miles north of Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday.
Mann said the latest remains were buried deep in dense clay that protected them from exposure to air and decomposition. He said a mixture of jet fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid from the crashed plane might have helped preserve them.
The remains could include part of a finger or toe and might yield a print that could confirm they belong to the missing pilot, he said.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon's top official seeking information about MIAs arrived in Vietnam yesterday for talks with senior officials on efforts to determine the fate of 1,621 U.S. servicemen missing in Vietnam.
Garrett stressed that forensic anthropologists must analyze them to confirm they were human.
James Wold, deputy assistant secretary of defense, came from neighboring Laos, where he held similar meetings about investigations into the fate of the 505 U.S. servicemen missing there.
Laos' agreement last fall to increase the number of joint U.S.-Laotia investigation
teams from three to four has helped immeasurably, Wold told reporters at Hanoi's airport.
Of the 1,621 Americans listed as missing in Vietnam, most are known to have been killed, but their bodies were never recovered.

Defense Department officials said. Only 55 servicemen were last seen alive and in imminent danger of capture. In addition, 77 servicemen are unaccounted for in Cambodia and eight in China, where their planes strayed while on missions in Vietnam.
