SPORTS UNIVERSITY DAILY KANSAN Monday, March 13, 1995 Weekend is 'ugly' for tennis teams By Robert Moczydlowsky Kansan sportswriter "We won, but it wasn't a very solid match," said Kansas men's coach Michael Center. "We fought hard and found a way to win, but it wasn't pretty. We won ugly." Kansas men's tennis opened its outdoor season against Tulsa on Saturday with a win that it would just as soon forget. Saturday's match saw No. 23 Kansas use yet another rearranged singles lineup. The most notable switch saw junior Reid Slattery debut at the No. 1 singles spot, losing 6-3, 6-0, to Bill Million. "We still have some improvement to do," Center said. "We got some good efforts, but some of our guys didn't make the adjustment to playing outdoors. It was a little windy, and the conditions weren't the best — but that's the way the 'weather is out here.' Kansas made the trip to Tulsa, hoping for warm weather. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association rules state that if temperatures are more than 50 degrees, the match must be played outside. The temperatures on Saturday were warm, but the Oklahoma wind seemed to give the Javahawks fits. "It wasn't cold, it was just windy." Center said. "We have to make the adjustments to the outside game now, though. We don't have any more indoor matches scheduled." Kansas freshman Enrique Abaroa areed. "We haven't been able to practice outside at all," he said. "I really had a hard time with the wind in my first set. I had to attack more and put more pressure on in the second set to win." Abaroa's 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, win over Ken Pranic gave Kansas a 2-1 lead, but it would be the lower spots in the singles lineup that would eventually decide the match. Wins from Victor Fimbres and Tim Radogna at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles cemented a 4-3 Jawhawk win. "Victor and Tim have really improved and are back up on their levels," Abaroa said. "Overall, I think that our team is improving in singles. We still need to be more consistent." Consistency was on the top of Center's list of Kansas' needs as well. "We'll continue to rearrange the lineup until we find something that works," he said. For the No. 18-ranked Jayhawk women's team, the weekend road trip was less fruitful. On Friday, the women faced Louisiana State, losing 6-3. Senior Nora Koves and freshman Christie Sim won the only singles matches of the weekend against LSU. Koves defeated Suzana Rodriguez 6-3, 6-4, and Sim defeated Elina Rocha 6-2, 6-4. Yesterday, the women's team traveled to Austin, Texas, to play no. 4 Texas. Texas dominated the Jayhawks, winning all but one match en route to an 8-1 victory. Koves —ranked No. 5 nationally — faced No. 2 ranked Kyle Pace, losing 6,1-0. The only Kansas victory came at the No. 3 doubles spot, where Sim and junior Kim Webster defeated Nomeana Rasolomala and Ashley Johnson, 6,3-6,2. Spring Break Specials!
