By Tom Erickson Kansan sportswriter A late-game rally by the Kansas baseball team fell short, yesterday as the Jayhawks lost to Iowa 7-6 at Hozdulm-Pauin Stadium. Iowa scored all seven of its runs in the first two innings off Kansas freshman pitcher Ryan Van Gilder (0-2), who eventually settled down to strike out four Hawkees in seven innings in the losing effort using effort. "Ryan pitched real hard," Kansas coach Dave Bingham said. "We have a lot of faith in his stuff. Today he had a lot of trouble early, but when we took him out, he left on a positive note." Kansas scored three runs in the first inning and added single tallies in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Sophomore second baseman Joe DeMarco singled to lead off the Jayhawks ninth and went to second on a hit-and-run fielder's choice by junior catcher Ted Meadows. Bingham admitted that the hit-and-run call in the ninth was a gamble, but he was disgusted with the two strikeouts. Turney then both struck out to end the game. "We took a chance to win with one at bat," he said. "I'm really upset with the strikeouts. We just couldn't get it together." Kansas senior shortstop Dan Rude led the Jawhaves' offensive attack Sophomore outfielder Justin Headley and junior outfielder Brian "We came in worse off than we left. We took two out of three and played hard." Dan Rude Kansas senior shortstop with three hits. Rude said the Jayawk's desire was absent in the ninth inning. "We just didn't compete very well today," he said. "I just think we ran out of innings. We had three guys in a position to win the game and just didn't get the job done." fell to 4-10. Kansas earned victories in the first two games of the weekend series. The Jayhawks Kansas ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory Friday. Junior pitcher Jamie Splitttorr (1-3) threw six innings for the win and freshman Robert Keens recorded his first save. Kansas senior Brent Wilhelm safely slides into second base. Junior pitcher Clay Baird (2-2) combined with freshman Casey Barrett on a three-hit shutout as the Jayhawks topped the Hawkeyes 6-0 on Saturday. Richard Devinki / KANSAN "We came in worse off than when we left," he said. "We took two out of three and played hard." Senior third baseman Brent Wilhelm, who had two hits yesterday, said the team had not reached its full potential. "I think we're getting better," he said. "This team is really talented. The series was a bit sloppy but we got two wins out of it." Bingham said Iowa came out big in yesterday's game to avoid losing its third consecutive. "I think it's hard to sweep a Division I team," he said. "I told our team that we made these guys mad and that they got to us today." Kansas will face Southwest Missouri State in a make-up game at 3 this afternoon. Sophomore pitcher Robert Garola (0-0) is expected to start for the Jayhawks.
