6 Thursday, June 28, 1979 Summer Session Kansan A one an' a two Bill Kelly, associate dean of admissions and records, conducts the Lawrence Municipal Band every Wednesday evening during June and July in South Park. The band is sponsored by the City of Lawrence and Musicians Union Local 512. On most Wednesday evenings in June and July, Bill Kelly goes home from his job as KU's associate dean of admissions and board. The Lawrence Municipal Band, that is, Kelly is no stranger to the conductor's podium. He conducted an Army band for four years and was during that time a high school band director for a number of years. But that was a year ago. He has been conducting the municipal band in the University's administrative offices. Kelly's band enlightens audiences He said the most important purpose for him is to help people who can re- lax and enjoy a good mood. The band does a good job of entertaining, if the size of the crowd it attracts is any indication, Kelly said that as many as 2,000 people have attended the concerts, usually held at 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the gazebo in South Park. The crowds hear good music played well. Recent programs have included works by "We're not trying to educate anybody." Kelly said. "We're trying to entertain." Staff Reporter Kelly is the conductor, musical director, librarian, paymaster and anything else for the band, which is sponsored by the City of Lawrence and Musicians Union local $12. By TONY FITTS Beethoven and Berlioz, as well as Rodgers and Hammerman and Bill Conti. The band's next concert, scheduled for Thursday, July 5 because of the Fourth of July holiday, will feature patriotic music: "The Band," by Billy Joel; "Sousa; Sousa; "America the Beautiful," as arranged by Carmen Dragon; and possibly "American Salute," by Morton Gould. Some of the best musicians in Lawrence play this music, including many of the local professionals and members of the KU music faculty. Paul Gray, of Paul Gray's Jazz Place, and Dick Wright, of KANU, are some of those who play with the band. Wright said he had played also saxophone in the band for "at least 15 of 16 years." "Very few of the musicians are in music full-time," he said. "Most of them, like me, have full-time jobs in other areas and play for the fun of it. It'd be a marvellous band if you could bring five days, five days a week and every week the year, but then it wouldn't be quite so fun." Although the band practices for only one hour each week, just before the performances, the audience would never know it by the sounds of its music. "The best wind players in town are in that band," the Rev. Buck Henderson, minister of Plymouth Congregational Church, and baritone player, said. "It's probably one of the best municipal bands in the country. And that's not just my rating, I've heard that from people coming in for the Midwestern Music Camp." Those wind players play a lot better together because of Kelly, Henderson said. "He gets all those excellent musicians from the school of Fine Arts together, with their egos and knowledge of music, and even though he was only a high school band director, gets them to play together and enjoy it. "He can lose his temper at some of the playing and yell at those guys without any trouble. Then he'll take some kidding about it afterward, but he knows how to make it all smoother." Clyde Byson, who has been playing in some kind of band in the gazezo in South Park for almost fifty years, said about Kelly. "He does a real fine job. He's really interested in the music and that what's it about him," he said. "To help him set away from his other job." "I hope the concerts are a place where the people in town can come and relax," he said. "If the music goes in one ear and whirls around a little bit and makes you feel good because it's melodious, it makes me feel good." But Kelly's therapy is using music to help the audience enjoy themselves. Summer Camp: (R) No, this isn't like my summer camps I've ever been to, but should be entertaining nonetheless. Director makes 'Alcatraz' more than routine escape By JEFF KIOUS Kansan Reviewer Once again, Clint Eastwood would the screen in the tough guy image that has matured over the years. The film is based on a true story of three men, in the 1960s, who chipped through their wounds while trying to escape Alcatraz Prison in the San Francisco Bay. Even though the man have never been found, the details of the escape came from a book about the case written by J. Campbell Bruce. This time, Eastwood plays a tough con in "Escape From Alcatraz." Eastwood portrays the main character, inmate Frank Morris. Even though Eastwood's character and background in the film are unrecognizable, he does a good job with the con man role. Although Eastwood's name is the main attraction for the film, the real star of the movie is Director Don Siegel. It is Siegel's moviemaking expertise that helps the director overcome his feelings without having to worry about whether an upcoming scene will be properly executed. The film is unique in that Siegel emphasizes the actual escape attempt rather than the escape through a wall. however, develop a sense of desperation among the inmates with effective camera Siegel also emphasizes the deprivation of small qualities in Alcatraz so well that the criminals felt they were going to die. The already unpleasantness of Alcatraz is worsened by an unleerling warden, portrayed by Patrick McGoohan, who believes he should be punished, not rehabilitated. The plot is slow moving until the end witen Siegel increases the suspense, leaving the viewer wondering whether the three will successfully escape. Almost all of the movie is filmed from within the prison walls. As a result, the camera angle is very limited; the cameras are on the inside looking out. This camera angle is the most effective part of the movie because by creating a closed-in feeling, it allows the viewer to want the escape attempt to be a success. This film is an excellent example of why a director plays the most important part in the film-making process. With Siegel, Ben Barnett, and John Galt, the adventure instead of a routine escape story.
