As a spin-off of the traditional hat trick, Florida Panthers fans began celebrating "rat tricks" in the 1996 NHL season. When celebrating multiple goals in a game, the fans threw plastic rats onto the ice. The tradition started when right wing Scott Mellanby killed a rat in the Panthers' locker room before a game and went on to score two goals.
