Ill. GOP seeks 'Rambo republicans'

CHICAGO — The city republican chairman called on democrats yesterday to desert their party and become "new Rambo republicans" rather than back Adalai Stevenson for governor, whose running mate is a radical Lvndon LaRouche sumpter.
Cook County GOP Chairman Donald Tottel said the apparent victories by LaRouche candidates in the democratic races for lieutenant governor and secretary of state indicated that the party was in disarray and had strays from the mainstream of American politics.
The LaRoche candidates platform includes mandatory acquired
immune deficiency syndrome testing and quarantining those who contract the disease.
Totten invited democrats to cross over to the Republican Party. Gov. James Thompson, a third-term republican, was unopposed in the primary.
"Those that we are courting are new Rambo republicans—those who leave to fight against the odds and win," he said.
Stevenson vowed he would not run with LaRouce candidate Mark Fairchild, 28, who won the democratic nomination for lieutenant governor.
"I will never run on a ticket with candidates who espouse the hate-
ruited folly of Lyndon LaRouche," Stevenson said Wednesday.
Stevenson's hand-picked lieutenant governor, state Sen. George Sangmeister, lost out to Fairchild, one of several candidates affiliated with LaRouche's National Democratic Policy Committee.
Under Illinois law, candidates for the two highest state offices must run as a team to avoid electing a republican-democrat combination.
While Stevenson was assessing his options, Fairchild issued a statement saying his reluctant running mate should get on with the election.
"Instead of launching a witch hunt against us because he doesn't like us, he should concentrate on the issues,"
said Susan Johnson, a Fairchild spokeswoman.
The State Board of Election said Stevenson had missed the filing date to run as an independent. He could run as a third party candidate, but would have to file an entirely new slate of candidates by Aug. 4, the board said.
Stevenson said he would wait for the vote canvassing to make sure the results of the contest were legitimate before deciding to form a new party. Other options include recounting the votes and examining the campaigns of the LaRouche candidates to see whether they violated any laws, he said.
