March 21, 1986 Nation/World University Daily Kansan Four killed in South Africa United Press International JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Police said four men died in racial violence yesterday as blacks prepared to mourn the 1960 police massacre of 69 people in Sharpeville — the single bloodiest incident in the history of black opposition to white minority rule. In Port Elizabeth, leading white businessmen said they would go to court in an effort to overturn government banning orders against two black dissidents there. Banning is a form of punishment used by the government to silence its opponents. Banning orders, among other things, can dictate with whom a person may meet and where a person can live. Businessmen in Port Elizabeth failed twice this week to persuade Louis le Grange, law and order minister, to lift house arrest orders on black community leaders Mkhusei jack and Henry Fazzie. Police said two black men were stabbed and burned to death by other blacks in Cape Town's Guguletu township Wednesday. Two men were stoned to death while walking together in Johannesburg's Soweto black township, police said. Two children were wounded and nine were arrested in Soweto when police fired on a crowd that was attacking them with stones and gasoline bombs, police said. Three black men were critically burned in Port Elizabeth's Motherwell ghetto by gas bombs, they said. Also yesterday, a spokesman for the Anglo-American Corp. said a miner was killed in a tribal battle fought with sticks and homemade metal weapons at Vaal Reefs mine, the world's largest gold mine. in fighting at the mine between Xhosa and Basatho tribesmen in the past week. Police fired tear gas into the fight Wednesday to disperse the tribesmen. At least 10 people have been killed The latest deaths raised to 37 the number of people killed in one of the bloodiest weeks this year of antigovernment violence, tribal battles and gold mine riots. Over 1,300 people — the overwhelming majority of them black — have been killed since violence erupted in 1984 over the white-minority government's policies of racial segregation, known as apartheid. A black trade union official said police fired tear gas into a meeting hall in Germiston, just outside Johannesburg, where 300 unionists were discussing a strike Wednesday. Eight union leaders remained hospitalized yesterday. Utah students guard shanties from arsonists The Associated Press No one was injured. Police said the apparent arson was the second such incident in two weeks. SALT LAKE CITY — One of two wood-and-cardboard shanties built by students at the University of Utah to dramatize protests against apartheid in South Africa was set on fire Tuesday, authorities said Student protest leaders said Wednesday that they would rebuild the shanty and continue their around-the-clock vigil.
