James Blanchard have bet weekend trips on the outcome of today's NCAA tournament basketball game between the University of Kansas and Michigan State University. If Michigan State wins the game, Blanchard will spend a weekend at his favorite hotel, Lawrence's Holiday Inn Holdmein. Carlin said, Kansas wins. Carlin will spend a weekend at Mackinac Island in Michigan. And in Washington, U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery of Kansas announced he was betting a 100-pound sack of flour on the Jayhawks' Midwest Regional seminal game in Kansas City, Mo. Rep. Bob Carr, a Michigan Democrat, matched the wager with a bushel of cherries. Acker considers post MANHATTAN — Kansas State University President Diane Acker announces yesterday that he had withdrawn his name from consideration for a top federal agriculture job, and instead was considering a post with the U.S. International Development. Acker said he was in final discussions with officials about his possible appointment as director for food and agriculture of the federal agency. Club sues AG view TOPEKA — A Topeka private club has filed a lawsuit challenging opinions by the district attorney and attorney general that it is illegal to give away Missouri lottery tickets to Kansas as a business promotion. The lawsuit was filed this week by Scotch Mist Inc., which owns Picasso's private club. Named in the suit are Shawnee County attorney Gene Olander and Kansas attorney General Robert Stephen. Turtle bill reappears TOPEKA — The Senate Federal and State Affairs Committee yesterday voted to introduce a bill that would make the Terrapene armor, Agassiz, or the orate box turtle, the official fittel of Kansas. A similar bill also was introduced in the House. Both men issued opinions last month saying they think it is illegal to distribute the tickets. Students at Caldwell Elementary School in Caldwell have mounted an intense campaign in support of the small reptile.
