Army ROTC marches with revised Jayhawk

The Army ROTC's old Jayhawk design has outlived its usefulness. So it was time to have a new Jayhawk that would inspire cadets to be all that they could be.

The old design no longer meant anything to the students, Maj. T.L. Kennard, enrollment officer for the Army ROTC and assistant professor of military science, said recently.
"We were just looking for something that indicated both our involvement with the University of Kansas and Army ROTC," said Kennard.
The old Jayhawk had been marching stiff-legged, rifle in wing across the squad's paraphernalia for so long that no one could remember when it was born.

The Jayhawk design is completed after the
"Follow Me" statue at Fort Benning,
Ga. The Jayhawk imitation has one
wing raised, leading followers on. Boon and Kennard both said anyone who was familiar with the Army would realize that the statue was the pattern for the new Jayhawk.
It is now seen on red sweatshirts sported by students who have earned the right to wear the new symbol.
"Just about everything is based on rewards there," Cowan said. "That's how the system works."
Kimberly Cowan, Wichita freshman, received one of the shirts by bringing in a student who signed up for the program.
Cadets cannot buy the shirts, Kennard said. They can only get them by bringing in another student to enroll in an ROTC class or by getting a student who has had no contact with the program to sign up for ROTC basic camp.
The new Jayhawk was adopted last November by popular vote of the cadets. It was put on sweatshirts by the Army ROTC in January.
