16 University Daily Kansan Nation/World Thursday, March 20, 1986 Vikings end losing streak by winning in Cleveland United Press International CLEVELAND — This city is hungry for a winner and Cleveland State's basketball team is trying to take care of its appetite. The Indians haven't been in postseason play since 1954. The Browns haven't won an NFL playoff game since 1969. And the only time the Cavaliers won an NBA playoff series was in 1976. But the Vikings of Cleveland State, previously the city's least talked about sports team, claimed victories over Indiana and St. Joseph's in the NCAA tournament and grabbed the town's attention. Hundreds of Cleveland State fans filled Eulidic Avenue after the team's game. Senior forward Clinton Smith isn't sure what will happen if they beat Navy on Friday in East Rutherford, N.J., and then go on to win the East Regional with another victory Sunday. "They're liable to tear down a building if we go to the Final Four," said Smith, a Cleveland native. "This town is hungry for a winner." Wichita State narrows field to 6 finalists WICHTA — The search committee for a new basketball coach for Wichita State has narrowed its list of candidates to six, a WSU spokesman said. Casey Scott, sports information director for the school, said that the committee is reviewing the six finalists but that no deadline had been set for picking one to fill the post. Gene Smithson was fired earlier this month after his eighth season as head coach for Wichita State. Athletic Director Lew Perkins said he fired Smithson because of the past three disappointing seasons, declining attendance at games, and community and media apathy toward the program. Sources familiar with the search process told the Wichita Eagle-Bacon that the six finalists were Dannynee of Ohio; Jim Harris of Peppardine; Bob Wenzel of Jacksonville; Bill Foster, former South Carolina coach; Eddie Fogler, an assistant coach at North Carolina; and Jim Brandenburg of Wyoming.
