No-shows taint tourney finals By Dawn O'Malley Sports writer Their bodies were contorted in human knots as each man tried to pin his opponent's shoulders to the mat for three long, agonizing seconds. The top wrestlers in the greek and independent league were pitted against each other last night at Robinson Center for the Hill championship in nine weight divisions. The Hill championship went on as planned although some wrestlers did not show up for their matches. Seven of the nine matches were won by forfeit. In the heavyweight division, Chris Rhodes, a 296-pound Phi Kappa Theta senior from Prairie Village, was pitted against Eric Schwein, a 235-pound Ulysses freshman. Randy Lowe, a 135-pound freshman from Stanley, won by forfeit and said he was not pleased with the tournament format. In the first period, Schwein scored two points on a take-down, but Rhodes used his weight advantage to "I am disappointed with the system," Lowe said. "You get up for the match and they don't show up. It is kind of a letdown. Schwein said he wasn't scared of Rhodes because he had wrestled against men bigger than Rhodes. He said he was going to use his quickness against the big man. "The competition is tough. The sport demands a lot. If you don't take it seriously you'll be injured when you walk away, if you can walk away." "A lot of them who wrestle, I outsize them," Rhodes said. "I know how to use my weight and force moves. "They, Greeks, never show up. 'They guess they don't want to wrestle a game.'" But some wrestlers were not as fortunate to have an opportunity to prove themselves because their opponents didn't show up. "I didn't show because I felt that the wrestling was handled bad," said Tim Zabelin, Olathe junior. "I felt that if you win the greek that's all that matters." Debbie Roberts, assistant director of recreation services, said she was disappointed because of the no-shows. The no-shows were distributed evenly between greeks and independents. Last year, the tournament was an all-Saturday event. HOUSTON - The University of Houston, rocked by allegations of payoffs and special treatment for star football players, has established a special committee to review its academic treatment of athletes. One former athlete also continued to play football, including making an appearance in the 1981 Sun Bowel, and attend classes after he was placed on academic suspension. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Lyle Alzado, whose spirited play and short fuse made him one of the most feared players in the National Football League, announced his retirement yesterday, ending a 15-year career in which he played on two Super Bowl teams. The former All-Pro defensive end, who tore an Achilles' tendon late in the 1965 season, said he would pursue a full-time entertainment career, including a costarring role in an upcoming CBS movie title "Ocean of Fire."
